New Video - AM2R Preview 3

First of all thanks for all the birthday greetings, they cheered my week up.
Anyway, here´s the new video I promissed. You can watch the YouTube version here:

Or, you can take a minute to download the high quality 60 FPS version (Requires XVid codec):

Rapidshare - MegaUpload - MediaFire

Basically, the video shows a comparison between the original and the redone versions of some places and events. There´s some old footage from past videos, re-recorded with the new tile sets. Oh, and you can see a Gamma Metroid, finally.

Have a good weekend.

Congrats ! It looks awesome ! There's maybe some things to fix (like the falling speed when jumping or maybe the averall speed of the game, too high, but I can be wrong).

Good luck !

Effing Epic, Doc. The gammas look sweet, as does everything else.

I did expect something along these lines, but it's so much better to actually see it. :P

AMAZING! Absolutely brilliant! I love comaprisons! I like seeing what sucked (sorry too harsh) in one thing and whats amazing at the new thing!

So lets see, everything was perfect except for maybe you could do a few things to the following:

chang up the sprites for the jump ball boss a little so we dont have to be like, "he's supposed to be mutated AFTER he got infected by the X, so he shouldnt look like that here." maybe a different colour sceme.

when going up that tube thing with the spider ball, make sure the ball layer is behind the tube layer so it looks like you're actually inside it.

The Gamma's look great, but i feel as though there's one big dent on its shell where there should either be two, or none. Its just distracting.

The music is going on my iPod! Thats how much i love it!!

¡Guau!

I've never written here before, but after watching the new video, I thought I should drop a huge: "CONGRATULATIONS!". The game is looking awesome. HyruleSwordsMan's sprites look gorgeous and the effects are incredible.

Waiting for the 60fps video was also totally worth it ;)

Saludos desde Madrid.
The Gamma Metroid is AMAZING! You've taken the original gamma and made it awesome! Congratulations Dr. M.

OMG!!! That is the only thing I can say to describe how much this game's look so far owns anything that Nintendo could have done with 2-D Metroid games.

Great preview! Before, I couldn't wait to play your remake. Now, I REALLY can't wait to play it!

When you read the negative comments I'm about to write, keep in mind that the rest looks great and that I'm only commenting on those negative things because I want to help make the game even better.

The first thing that jumped out at me was the Gamma Metroid's apparent lack of animation, except when its arms/legs/whatever you want to call them start moving. You should have them constantly oscillating, but slowly. You could also have the body's sprite running in a 3- or 4-frame cyclic animation, to make it look more alive. Look at Zerg Overlords in StarCraft for an example of a similar creature and effect.

There's a similar problem with the Alpha: it also looks like a static sprite that just floats around. Animate it a little bit, with a pulsating eye or you could even have the belly pulsate slowly, which will draw attention to that part and indicate that that's where the player should shoot.

Also, when the Alpha comes out of the original Metroid body, it just doesn't look very dramatic. Metroids store energy, so when they burst out of a previous form, there could be a kind of energy flash, at least. If you could add more Metroid guts flying, and have a few pieces remain on the walls and ceiling, that would probably help sell it better. Sound, here, is what is going to make it feel more real. You're a sound engineer (right?) so I'm not too worried there.

The spring ball boss: it would be nice if you could rework that sprite, as it looks too much like it was just ripped out of the GBA games.

Actually, I would recommend going through all the sprites and tilesets that you ripped from previous games, and rework them a bit more, adding little details and variations, and tweaking the colors. Or replacing them with entirely new stuff. The stuff that's already been redone is good, so there's no reason to think you can't improve on what came before.

I saw that the rapid fire suggestion I made was in there, but greatly improved so you can continuously fire if the fire button was constantly being pressed. Keep up, it seems like Zetas, Omegas, and the Queen along with the what is remaining of the last area is what is left to accomplish, followed by a final quality and program check to see if any glitches or errors are remaining then all of your hard work will pay of with a completed project and many extremely happy metroid fans that have been supporting you and your hard work

I have to say, that was amazing. You are one of the best prorammers I have known. keep up the good work.

Wonderful! The music has definately improved since your music preview.

Someone suggested putting samus' morphball sprite behind the tube sprite. Maybe making it transparent over samus would be better with another background behind samus. That way we can see samus' animation that you work so hard on. :)

Shower with praise, etc etc.

One question: How well does the dark area before the Metroid Queen's lair hold up? It looks like it'd be really hard to fight a Omega in there, much less navigate. Then again, I could only tell so much from the snippet.

oh, does any one know what is going on with Metroid: SR388. I haven't been able to get on the site in some time. And it was hard to find out when it was up what the status of the game was.

what does HyruleSwordsMan use to create his sprites and what do you use to create your tile sets?

i have watched the video 3 times already...
And i have to say the the suit upgrade was the most bad ass thing i have seen in a 2D metroid to date

cool looking metroids btw :D

This, well, I have no words for how wonderful to see the progress on this. I absolutely cannot wait for this to be completed. I have been studying the programming for games like this, unfortunately I may be way too far behind to help, as much as I wish I could.

Keep up the good work!

Karrde said…
As usual, you've outdone yourself. I have to agree with what Shutz said. That being said, gameplay si more critical. I'd prefer a game that played very well to one that looked pretty, but sucked in the gameplay arena (I'm not worried as you can imagine). I'm wondering about the speeds, though. Everything seems way too fast. Is that the actual in game speeds or a result of After Effects? If thats the in game speeds, I wonder if that shouldn't be toned down a bit?

In any case, the video was godlike. Absolutely stunning. Every day you manage to get me more and more hyped for this :)

Your dream was to play M2 with ZM graphics. That's what you have done. Computers can produce better effects that the GBA, so it is just good to take use of that advantage.
Anonymous said…
looks awsome, congratulations. i love it.... But the beta Metroid look really odd, seems very stiff
Anonymous said…
Incredible! Idont know what its called but the metroid with the arms(tentacles) hanging underneath it is the most awesome metroid i've ever seen!
An_Artist said…
I personally agree with everything Shutz said in this page. Of course, they are slightly more on the detailed side but they would still help in making the game that much better.

I'm just sayin, if you can make that really cool spikey enemy that you blow its armour off so brilliantly animated like that, i'm sure you can do the same for the metroids, which is the real focus of the game.
Anonymous said…
OMG that looks Awesome! Great job!

WOW!! Keep up the fantastic work! It's so interesting to see the graphics redone Zero Mission style in Metroid II. Excellent! I look very forward to playing this.
Ratiqu said…
Hmm. After watching it again and reading some of the comments, I'd like to add something.

As was stated before, the gamma looked amazing, but it's kinda stiff and seems kinda....off...somehow because of it. The suggestion for idle movement frames is an excellent one. Same goes for the Alpha.

The morphball boss really needs a bit of editing; too much like the one in Fusion.

Are you adding difficulties to this? If so, perhaps adjusting the range of vision in dark areas would be a good difficulty modifier. The less you can see, the better your reflexes need to be.

Excellent work, overall.
Anonymous said…
How many areas are there in the game as you are labeling them "area 3", "area 4", etc?
Michael Power said…
I remember playing Metroid II when I was a kid, without really knowing anything about the game. I was expecting every Metroid in the game to be an Alpha, and I was in for a big shock when I hit my first Gamma.

The end of that video, with the new and improved Gamma, recaptured my younger self's feeling of 'Holy Crap! What?!! Ahhhhhh!!'.

I can't wait to play it.

omg great work on the gamma metroid... and making the game much more challenging... this is all to great!

Just to be on the safe side, I would STRONGLY recommend adding some copyright information at the bottom of the blog or something, Just in case...

Christicles, that was fun to watch. I notice the Metroids are rather "float towards you" aggressive in comparison to how they would normally keep a certain distance in Metroid 2 before closing in. Don't really know what to make of that, though. xD
DarkPhazon said…
damn if the gamma looks so awesome then i bet the beta is gonna be even tighter doc... you... are just the greatest game creater EVAH. congrates for all of your fans of this game and congrates for your game... keep it up man your reaching the end

Man, that trailer had "EPIC" written all over it. But, I do agree with the things shutz said about the Alpha and Gamma Metroids. But man, the whole thing looks as if it was an official Nintendo game. It is absolutely incredible.

(I wish I was that dedicated with projects like these.)
Anonymous said…
I can't even begin to tell you how amazingly awesome that gamma metroid looks. The animation is fluid and beautiful, the lightning attack is brilliant...AND IT DRAINS ENERGY!!!111ELEVEN

So, are all forms of metroid going to have a life-draining grab attack, or just the larvae and gammas?
Looking very, very good!

Your work ranks up there as one of the most incredible amateur projects I've ever seen... and I've been following fan-games for over 10 years.

This (what I assume to be) final trailer will pave way for a marvelous remake. You're rivaling what even Nintendo themselves could do with a 2D sprite remake. How fitting it is that I watched this the day E3 coverage began.

Wow man I really hope you finish this and Nintendo doesn't be assholes and slap it with a C&D order. They'd have to be pretty petty to shut something this good down when it's coming along so well. And if those bastards do shut it down, they better make it up to us with a Metroid 2 remake like the one you're making, and hire you to do it. I wouldn't play it otherwise. :)

Keep up the damn good work, I can't wait to play the finished piece! :D

Team Ninja making Metroid game! Finally a 3d Metroid game that will show off Samus' acrobatics. Camera angles will probably be frustrating though, lol. Not sure i like the whole Samus and interacting with other people thing. I really like the game to be just Samus out in the middle of nowhere by herself and alone taking on hordes. Team Ninja should do an awsome job with the game play though.

I don't mean ta complain or anything (just a suggestion), after all you have put a HUGE amount of effort into making this... but the gamma, it is really good A+ sweet, but it doesn't rightly fit the environment. it looks a bit too... futuristic, not meant for GBA style standards. now don't yell at me people, I am just trying to put a point here that could affect how the graphics look.

Anyway, this is definetely the best video you've released so far. Keep it up!
Palamon said…
I totally agree with what Shutz said. I was thinking the same things when I watched the video.

I liked how the entering animation was changed with the spring ball guy.

I didn't like how the alpha just blasts out of the old shell. I liked how the old game had it slowly creep out, giving you that "Uh Oh, a metroid", then later, that "Oh no, it's evolving and getting stronger right in front of me" moments. It was a nice intro to the boss fight and gave the player a chance to mentally prepare. Rushing right into the fight loses that.

The metroids do look very static, especially the gamma, those legs need to wiggle a bit instead of just hanging there like dead weight.

The environments look top notch, I like all the improvements you've made. The floating slimeballs slowing you down was an interesting adjustment, I can just imagine dealing with that some sections when you don't have the space jump.

The ruins sequence didn't seem as refined, the blocks seemed alittle too cluttered and the spitting statues guys looked off color with the background.

The industrial area with the fire flower guys looked great, I love the mechanical debris falling off

Overall, great job!

but who knows this is still a work in progress don't complain till its done. We have no idea what the doc has up his sleeve.

Great preview! Although I have to agree with shutz in that the metroids did look a bit to static, and that a more dramatic hatch sequence would be awesome.

Well, u dont have to make all the hatchings long, u could just make the first 2 or 3 of that evo. be slow and dramatic, and i personaly love the gammas, and sides, shouldent they be bigger? I mean a zeta comes out of that things back! I think nintendo didnt make them bigger in the original cuz of graphic limitations.

so doc, you gona respond to these comments any time soon?

god damn that is awesome hurry up and finish me wanna play!!

If Nintendo ever did decide to step in on you, my advice would be to say 'Hey! Let's make a deal!' and try and get the game finished and released on the Wii's VC with maybe a small fee given to you. IT's worth a shot.

Otherwise the game looks great. Someone already mentioned it, but animating the floating Metroid sprites a bit would make them look a lot cooler.

Keep up the great work!
