I am extremely psyched about this. Played the demo and I was like "Oh man! Equivalent quality to an actual Nintendo game!"

Oh man! Pray to god that Nintendo doesn't try to screw us all over especially the creator of this fan game with a cease a desist, they've worked so hard and long on it that it deserves to be for download! once its available those who download it and later find that it was remove should always post their download of up somewhere on the net!

It's unbelievable that this is finally coming. His first post for this game was at the very start of 2008. He said that he had already spent over 2 years working on this game, meaning that the project started in 2005. 11 years later, we finally get this masterpiece! This looks like the best 2D Metroid, and it's not even made by Nintendo! There is only one word that can describe my feelings. HYPE!!!!!

Ich habe gedacht es kommt noch eine Demo, aber irgendwie wie überascht es mich nicht, acu in Deutschland ist das Projekt AM2R sehr beliebt. Ich freue mich schon sehr darauf.

Wow man, The countdown is on, till it's finished I assume. I have been playing the demo of AM2R now for a while. Now, that its gonna be finished, I'll be able to play from start to finish. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for all the hard work that has gone into this game.

Over 8 years and it is almost here. I can't believe it is actually happening. THIS is what the Metroid fans want, and I am so happy you took it upon yourself to create a game for the fans when Nintendo won't. Amazing work. And your game looks like an actual licensed Metroid game. Its unbelievable. You have also kept this project alive and kept a following behind it for over 8 years, which is a mind blowing feat in itself. You are doing truly amazing work here and you deserve so much for it. I hope amazing things and opportunities come your way. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Metroid is my favorite game series and it is very close to my heart. I appreciate everything you do, and I have followed you for about 7 years now. And I will continue to follow you even after this project is finished.

I say a metroid II demo on 3ds, with 3D effects, is a remake. The video is on youtube not fake.

As long as there is no money made from this it may be safe. There is a fan made castlevania simons quest remake that's been downloadable for at least 3 years now, totally untouched as well as a nes Ghostbusters remake as well.

I've been playing this since there was only one area.

Now it's almost complete.

My, how time flies.

Noooooooo why would you post a countdown... Nintendo's gonna see it's almost ready to launch and they'll swoop in with a C&D order...

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited AF that this is very soon upon us, but I'm so paranoid the Big N is gonna smash it before the rest of the world (not including all of us that've been following the project for so long) get the chance to experience it :(

You guys do realize Nintendo could've C&Ded this years ago when the first demos came out, right? They don't seem to have an interest in doing so.
Anonymous said…
You are doing so much for the Metroid Fanbase with this game. We're currently in the longest Metroid drought since Super Metroid's release (FedForce doesn't count, it's a mix of Halo's firefight mode and FIFA with Metroid Prime slapped on it). So you're releasing a remake of a mainline Metroid game right when the fans need it the most. After this "Shut Up" message that Nintendo is sending out to its Metroid fans begging for a new title, this is a zone of comfort.
This game has surpassed Zero Mission and Super Metroid in terms of quality and gameplay. You've kept to the formula of a 2D Metroid better than Nintendo has. I'm so thankful that after all these years of progress updates and demos, you haven't faced a cease and desist from the Nintendorks.
You are a hero in the Metroid community and shall be honored (at least in my mind), as such.'

Thank you.

first off gotta say im about to crap my pants with excitement for this... and one idea im kinda nuts about quarter arcades would be crazy awesome if you got really bored with nothing to do after the release to set this turkey up as an arcade for home and weirdos like me who build weird things... no saves just recharge spots and a score additive for every booger only for the first time you pop it, a time score somehow and % score, you get game over you need a token to continue and it wipes your score, get a high score and you can put your initials ...you let me know if this ever happens and i'll totally build anyone one free but i ain't paying fer nothing lol i'll just built it free the world needs more awesome crap! just a thought...

NO! What am I supposed to check up on now?

Seriously now, I can't believe the end is in sight.
There's only a few things I'm not too sure about.

Will there be mod support?
I don't mind if it's not on launch, everyone will want to play it at least a couple of times normally. What I'm curious about is later on. Being able to tweak the sprites and sounds to our taste would be a very nice adition.

On a less likely note, if there was also a way to edit the map... then this would become Metroid Maker PC, making an already great project even greater.

I think you'd even be able to sell that program if you were to make it since it only edits the layout of a map you made and doesn't contain any copyrighted material.

...of course it would mean you'd have to code all the abilities and enemies from all the 2D metroid games at that point to allow people to recreate pretty much anything and effecttively create their own custom story.

There's a lot of pros and cons for this idea and I can't say which one weighs more because I don't know how much effort it would take and wether or not it's worth it is all on you.

I know that this may not be possible so late in the game, Doc, but an X-parasite Easter egg, appearance, or reference would be very exiting and could connect ideas from Metroid fusion to better incorporate AM2R into the official Metroid Universe.

Even if, may I suggest, an X encounter occurs at the final section of the game where Samus eradicates the last eight original metroids, the only original metroids in the game. Maybe Samus encounters an X-parasite, which is then consumed by a classic metroid that moves in from off screen.

This is just an idea. However, I think that it could add a sense off legitimacy to the remake(by proving Fusion's claim that the X were natural lifeforms on SR388 with a natural predator being metroids, it would only make sense include the prey that metroids are designed to consume).

A more cryptic or simple appearance could even be made. Samus does proclaim in the Metroid Fusion intro that the X are "a life-form I had never encountered before."

I would be very satisfied by a small reference to the X. It really would be nice, but, do not take time away from any of all the other important aspects of AM2R. It really is a masterpiece.

isn't hyping this up kinda dangerous? shouldn't you just release it instead of making a ruckus and getting a C&D right in the head in the final stretch?

From what I hear, c&d's only happen if the person is making money off of the game. If Nintendo was going to do this, why didn't they c&d it two or three demos ago? Keep positive doc, you're doing what Nintendo hasn't, and its freeware!!! Can't beat that!!
Bluestorm83 said…
A lot of people seem to think that Nintendo would put put a Cease and Desist order right at the last second. This is generally not the way you want to do it. Especially since a C&D needs to be served, much like a subpoena. If I were releasing a project like this, and a C&D came... I'd simply go into complete lockdown, not open my door, not open any windows, not get my mail, not pick up the phone, etc. I'd keep myself sealed away until I'd uploaded it, and then LEGALLY I could say "Oh, I was never served that C&D. Sorry, but the project is done and released. Nothing left for me to stop doing." You want to stop a project that infringes on your property sooner rather than later. Which was more than viable the second that you try out the first playable demo and Samus Aran gets out of the Samus Ship on SR-388. Right there, bam, you can begin legal procedures to protect those three things that you own. And since the title itself proclaims that this is a Metroid 2 remake, you've got that too.

So there's most likely two reasons why Nintendo hasn't done anything here.

Reason 1) They haven't seen this. It's possible, though unlikely. After all, Nintnedo is busy with their own stuff, and indie remake tribute fan games are a niche that Nintendo can't make money on so why spend money looking at them?

Reason 2) Since Doc is using 100% homemade assets within the game (Dude even remade every sprite and all! DEDICATION!) Nintendo *can't* do anything, or more to the point isn't sure that they can. Especially considering that it's a 100% Free to Own game. Not profiting, not reusing any Nintendo-created assets, not running on any hardware they create... that would be a lot of money in Law Work to stop a not-for-profit... which is not in competition with any game that Nintendo is making right now. If Nintendo WERE making another side-scrolling Metroid (Which we all wish they were, honestly,) then maybe they'd do this. The Lost-Sale fallacy is the belief that people getting Free X over the internet creates an equal amount of lost sales. Not true; some will buy both, some who get the free thing would never have paid for either. But it is a principle that businesses operate by.

So I suppose that at the moment the most reasonable reason there hasn't been a C&D order is that Nintendo would have to spend money for it, but not get any gain of any kind. In fact, at the moment, a fan-made Metroid remake might actually RAISE interest in the Metroid series, which hasn't seen a new game in 6 years (If you count Other M,) 7 years (If you count the Prime Trilogy Re-Release,) 9 years (If you count the Prime series,) 12 years (If you count Zero Mission, as it's a partially new remake,) or a whopping 14 years if you've been waiting for a new Side Scrolling True Metroid game since Fusion!

Right now, Nintendo is working on Federation Force, which could be a lot of fun... but isn't a Classic Metroid by a long shot. So this game is a form of free advertising for the Metroid World.

METROID WORLD! Why don't they just make that, dammit! Make a procedurally generated MMO world, saying that the Federation found another planet that Metroids live on (Chozo created them, after all!) have people create their own unique characters, and make it a solo/co-op exploration dungeon crawler in the classic side-view style! It'll never happen.

But anyway, keep up the great work, Doc! We're all rootin' for ya!

ocarina of time 2D got a C&D and it was free. So was super mario 64 HD. so C&D's can still happen to free fan games.
Anonymous said…
So terrified of this turning into a Mario 64 hd. Then again I don't think Nintendo will want to tick off Metroid Fans anymore than they already have on the 20th.

If we make this go Viral it could create a resurgence for Metroid and maybe Nintendo will make a new roper 2D Metroid for us!

To those who worry about a C&D from Nintendo, it is in much more of a grey area than other games that have received them in the past. Ben Sprout, an area designer of Metroid Prime 3 commented on AM2R a while back, saying that he would have loved to remake the game but it never came to fruition, and commented on Doc's own remake, saying it looks, "pretty rad!" He also commented on his willingness to try it out. At the very least, a C&D would be decently argued against in NoA.

Is it gonna be posted on another site somewhere or is it just going to disappear into the aether?

I was just looking at an announcement for Environmental Station Alpha 2 and thought "Oh shit, I wonder how far along AM2R is!"....Came here and saw the countdown timer and breathed a sigh of relief that this hadn't been taken down by Nintendo sooner

I've been following this project since...... Well, about half a year before dookies video, so about 4 years ago. Watching the game grow, playing each demo was very exiting to see everything coming together. Doing this all of this (mostly) by yourself. That deserves so much respect. I know that paying you for the game would be breaking the copyright rule thingy, but I would gladly pay you for this amazing game. Kickstarter people can learn a lot from you. The fact you never asked for donations, help or anything else. The only thing needed was your undying love for the metroid fransise. I cannot wait untill the game releases in 14 days.

I'm new here, is it common for Nintendo to remove remakes/remastered editions? I heard about this project a few months ago. Bloody brilliant work. I honestly dunno how to thank you.

Really can't wait!
Unknown said…
@PKB
looking back.. i can't really recall when Nintendo actually stopped a remake/mode/hack directly. when a hack/mod called Project M(smash bros brawl hack) was becoming popular and was being played at tournaments Nintendo stopped the project indirectly by showing up to these tournaments and sponsoring the event themselves.. however in return they request that only official smash bros games be played.. meaning that Project M was off limits.

the fact of the matter is Nintendo still has the power to come in and stop this project with a cease and desist even as something minor like using the word "metroid" in the title. for example a chrono trigger rom hack called "chrono trigger crimson echos" had been in years of development and right at the very end Square Enix sent them a cease and desist just months before the project was finished. i'm just crossing my fingers and hoping this project gets released and distributed as quickly as possible. people seem to forget that copyrights are always in affect over anyone's work and although i love this project to death that doesn't mean this project hasn't violated copyrights.. although personally i don't give a damn. metroid has been abandoned by Nintendo.. maybe not legally but they seem to have ignored the metroid fans.

its pretty clear that they don't really care about the franchise either as they have no problems letting other companies make metroid games (retro studios, team ninja).. so why not let this fan project be? they are open to letting others make metroid games.. they should let the fans make them too as long as its non profit is really shouldn't matter.

This is neat and all, but when I tried to play that Metroid: Confrontation game of yours, I just could not get my DS4 controller to work. I am using SCPToolkit to get the DS4 to work on my PC.

Will AM2R support the DS4, and/or am I doing something wrong in trying to get the controller to work? Will other controllers work with the game? (as I do have some old PS1/PS2 to USB adapters for PC)

*Never mind about the DS4 issue. It seems like it'll work fine with AM2R if the demo is any indication. I don't understand why it didn't work with the other game, but as long as this releases and the DS4 doesn't give me problems on Windows 10, it should be fine.

You know, I think I was only 11 when I first saw some information about Metroid 2 being remade. We're talking like 2004-2006 here. I never thought that this game would come this close to completion. You could have given up so many times these past 10 years, and yet you are about to finish the game and give people a remake that Nintendo could have put together, but has not. (Instead, they are giving us Metroid: Chibi Robot Force, but that's another story)

Congratulations on just making it this far!

@Startex360> Well, Metroid 3 is Super Metroid and Metroid 4 is Metroid Fusion, they don't really need a remake. BUT, Metroid Prime and MP2 REALLY need a 2D version, and this is where it gets interesting. We could really use a AMP2DP (Another Metroid Prime 2D Project).

If someone has a copy, it'll appear in due time. I somely beleive there is not a true metroid fan out there who would take a C&D for this sitting down. I for one will personally see to it that nintendo hears my voice if they do, and i wont buy a single product of thiers ever again should they. This game is very close to my heart, as i am sure AM2R will be.

This game has reached and far surpassed my vision of a M2 remake, fan or official. Dr. M64, Thank you for giving me (and many others) a chance to see M2 in a way we could only dream!

@MetalGearPika
well said. i too have been dreaming about a metroid 2 remake since zero mission. hell even a writer for nintendo magazine back in the day wrote about a possible remake for metroid 2 after zero missions release i was all the hype for it.. but then the GBA life ended and no remake. i was like "no problem, i'm sure they will make it for the NDS"... that never happened either. after that i gave up all hope until i saw the video back in 2008 of the first demo footage. i'm just happy we are getting this game.

For all those worried about a C&D, I don't think you need worry for the following reasons.

1) The chrono trigger remake referred to on here was shut down by SquareEnix, not Nintendo. Nintendo knows fans remake their games. There's a Nintendo FanGame Convention every year.

2) Nintendo has to know about this by now. It's specifically mentioned in Wikipedia for Metroid 2, and it's also right on the main page of Google when you search for Metroid 2.

3) So many fans are mad AF about Federation Force, Nintendo would be stupid to not let this get released. Once done, they'd be able to buy a fully developed game that they could turn around and sell quickly to recoup their losses from FF.

In short, I don't think we have anything to worry about. August 6 can't come soon enough.

Metroids are already shitting bricks.

everyday i have been praying this game will be released before August 6th. this is my most anticipated game of the year :)

In response to the Anonymous above me:

This is also free-advertising for Federation Force; which itself could very well be a good, fun game. This way people can get a classic Metroid Experience and get excited about another game set in the same universe, but with new gameplay.

Is there any way fans can donate to your cause, money, or something else? You are the light in the darkness for me and this series. It's been many years since I've been this excited for Metroid.

This is cruel, since I have never play M2 I am waiting "patiently" for this release and hoping no lawyers get involved. Fingers crossed!!!

I'm still really nervous.

I want this game to be released as intended.

No CnD's, please. Then again, this is the Internet. Things still get released after a CnD.

Saludos.

No. If you donate, it's the fastest way to have it shut down by the C&D. Don't even mention it. All we need now is for Nintendo to search the comments for words like "pay" or "donate".

I wonder how many times I was excited by a non official metroid game before. Many times. I'm following this blog since 2009, always with that haunting feeling that this would be just another one. After all these years regularly checking updates an all, I never posted, anything. But now there is no escape for me. It's 3 days left on the counter, and I´m posting to say, Doc, you are a true hero. To many people. I don't know you are aware of the real accomplishment you are achieving with this lenghty, and certainly challenging journey. Just as my life changed when i first played Super Metroid, it will change again, not mine alone but also of a crowd o people because your work is of an outrageous importance for metroid fans. You created a big, complex, challenging and inspired, and faithfull of the original re-imagination of a important chapter of a series so great, so defining to the gaming universe, that even its owner, its creator itself cannot do justice. And YOU did. You are the man in charge we all wanted to be there, inside Big N's corridors! In the name of all that that people, and the name of this great series, I take my hat off to you! Congratulations!

this could very well be the best fan created project ever in the history of fan projects. i played the demo from around december era and the end areas i believe were still unfinished at that point. cant wait to experience the entire completed game. i remember when i first heard about this project in around 2010 or so and there was just a tiny area demo. wow it has come so far... this is amazing. i hope you continue to make your own original games in this style some how. this rivals super metroid for metroid of all time... it surpasses it in many ways.

it's not getting a c&d unless you sell the game and every 3 seconds it flashes a splash screen saying "don't buy Federation Force" as it automatically downloads a rom of it and every other metroid game on your computer signed with your home address

Thank you so much for seeing this project through to its end. I've been following it ever since 2010, and have loved coming here to see/play updates ever since. I'm really psyched to play the full game in two days! So much so that I'm actually doing a 100% Confrontation playthrough in anticipation, including all the medals (deleted them all just so I could get them again =P).

Again, thank you very much for all your hard work!

I commented in the wrong place lol. I'm posting this again cause i accidentally closed the tab. (Got those foward an back buttons in the corners of the arrow keys)Anyway...I've been following this game since 7th grade. I have been an avid Metroid game player since the age of 7 when i obtained a copy of Metroid fusion. Being bored, and waiting for new Metroid games, i decided to start searching for anything related. I had found maybe 2 projects, both of which were given up on early in production. I had spent many hours searching for something that wasn't a husk of what it could've been. After this uneventful search , I saw this. In the middle of 2014 (when i discovered this), the version was 1.32 if memory serves. It was early in the game and i had thought it was possible that it could be like the others, simply given up on. But, here we are. A countdown to the finish on the front page. I am now going into 10th grade still excited to see the final product. I had been too scared to comment this whole time. When i actually get the courage, my computer blue screens. Currently i must use my moms. Despite some lag caused by this computer, this game is still perfect to me. So to make up for many missed opportunities to comment, I comment now to tell you that i'm glad to have believed in this project, and that I appreciate your amazing work.

I am really looking forwards to this game.
The quality of the project is pretty on par of that of commercial releases and it just feels good being able to play a 2D Metroid game again. (I like the Prime games though)

I wish I had the means to make a financial donation to show my support for the hard work you put in this project and to encourage you to undertake new projects in the future.

But as others have pointed out, I am also worried Nintendo might try to quickly make an end to this.

Been following this since i saw the trailer back in 2008 "Metroid 2 Remake Preview" Feb 27 2008. it seems like only yesterday that i was an excited freshmen in high school. now i'm an excited junior in college. very proud of you Doc, you could have made this game easily with only a quarter of the things we have in the current demo but you decided to go above and beyond "just graphics". it saddens me to see people talk about this game and only its graphics as you have done so much with the game play. i have been wanting to say this for a while now.. here goes.. this game is going to be my favorite metroid game. i have made this decision based on gameplay alone. best controls, configuration, new features never seen in metroid games that work great and adds to the series and my god.. the game play has such Fluidity. i really can't find any more words to thank you and your team. thanks!
