Collisions done
Last night I finished with the collision. I checked and fixed each and every room so every slope, wall and floor does behave like its corresponding tile shows. If Game Maker just had any way of linking tiles to specific objects (or custom tile groups), this and many other steps wouldn´t have been necesary.
Anyway, all the rooms look and feel like they should, except of course the ones marked to be redone.
After checking some of my older work (including all the surface area), I keep adding rooms to my "redo" list. Some needed some tweaks, others are just plain. It´s this kind of "revisiting obsession loop" that made me stop making music a long time ago. You know, watching or hearing what you did yesterday and making it better, just to do the same the next day?
Now, coming up is the camera work. This is crucial for the transitions to look correctly, and there are a lot to be done. A good example of a missing camera controller is in the Confrontation demo, after you return from the dark room with the missiles and super missiles, you can see a weird camera motion that lasts a couple of frames as the transition ends. That´s what I´m trying to avoid.
It´s just an object and some code in most of the entrances and vertical corridors, but it´s necesary.
Last, but not least, this year´s NCFC (Nintendo Community Fangame Convetion) has been announced. I plan to attend with AM2R this year too, and I´m preparing some exclusive material like always. I´m just not sure if it´ll be as good and fresh as last year´s.
Feel free to suggest and discuss anything you want here or at the forums. Oh, and thanks for all the encouragement and kind words, I really appreciate them.

Having said that, don't get so obsessed over little tweaks that you let yourself get sick of the project like you did your music. Set a list of changes and stick with them til release. You can always improve things again in a version 1.1 release later if you change your mind.
Also, it'd really be great to hear some more music samples, get an idea on the status of the zeta, omega, queen, ect. ect. ect.
Either way, keep it up. Your commitment to the project is admirable.
I have played EVERY metroid game except Other M, so I'm hoping to play this one too. BTW I'm playing through Metroid 2 to get a peek at what is coming up! :)
I know what you mean about revisiting and fixing. I too do some music mixing and I find myself doing that alot... so much so that instead of being able to make monthly CD's, I was making 2 drops a year consisting of 10 CD's (20 a year) because I was never completely satisfied with what I did yesterday. :P
Now I've switched over to monthly and I find that everything goes smoother when you invest more time to do everything you want to do all at once when you first do it and allow yourself to accept what you've done and to accept what you didn't do for whatever reason that you didn't do it.
P.S. - Click my screenname for music downloads...
About the musics, it was good that you mentioned them. A music I love from the original Metroid 2 is the last room before the Queen, that one full of spikes. Pitty that room is too short and that music is only played in that room. I hope you made a good remake of that one.
Well, about dialogs, there would not be much, once Samus goes to SR388 alone. But if you could once in a while put her thoughts like in Fusion or cutscenes like Zero Mission, it would be really nice.
I don't see anything to change at all, your project is going so well, I'm try to find something to change but I don't, you're doing perfect. What the guy said previously is true, you can release a 1.1 version if you want to improve the game after releasing it.
Metroid 2 is still my favourite, no matter how incredible Metroid 3 is. The best plot of all Metroid games is in Metroid 2. I know you're gonna make it much more exciting than the original already made.
Thank you again and again for the time you're taking to do it for all fans.
DON'T BUST YOUR HEAD TOO MUCH, WITH YOUR DEDICATION AND HARD WORK THE PROJECT WILL BE A SUCCESS......
OH YEAH GO SHOW NINTENDO WHAT NEW METROID GAMES SHOULD LOOK LIKE......
A FRIEND, A FAN OF A CLASSIC GAME BEING MADE BETTER......
Ultimate Metroid fan here!
Can't wait to play!
Keep checking the blog each day!
Nice to see so much progress.
I hope it's coming soon!
Great job so far...
Gonna look forward to NCFC!
Everyone will be happy I'm sure.
Really excited to play!
Stellar work so for D64!
nice to hear that progress is made. :) I'm really getting hyped for this game XD
I know what you mean about making music (and all creative stuff in general). you always end up improving/altering, and then you're just in this evil circle of questioning everything you've done. :P or something along those lines...
I write music and lyrics myself and I can easily write and compose one in few hours (under one if I'm on fire). but then I spend the next five days second guessing it and changing small bits or adding almost pointless details that no one will notice.
but perfection makes practice! (wait... what?)
if you need help with the music for the game, I'll be glad to help :)
It would be a shame if you drop the project of frusrtation.
I enjoy hearing the progress being made :)
You're leaving me more ancious by everyday that passes lol
Can't wait to play the game, and i don't even have to say you're doing an awsome job.
Cheers!
Suggestions:
*If you're speed-boosting, keep boosted speed after you jump and hit the ground, or if you shine-spark onto a slope
*Would there be any way to go morph-ball in the middle of running without stopping and keep the speed? (maybe make pressing 'down' when speed-boosting turn you instantly to morph-ball mode?)
*The morph-ball seems to be slightly off horizontally, part goes through the ceiling
*'Sprint' feature like Super Metroid would be nice
*It's a VERY unnoticeable thing, but in the Metroid games the energy balls start 'blinking' faster before they disappear. Maybe add that in addition to the fading?
*Lower the music volume a bit in the pause menu
(...and do you have anything to do with Metroid:SR388? ^.^)

About Metroid 2 remake, I'm sure DoctorM64 won't make a sucking extension. As I saw in the preview, the new bosses are just normal enemies, but stronger (that's what I wanted!). And I hope the new movements don't make the map too different, but the original Metroid 2 has many empty rooms (with neither enemies nor items), so these rooms and little new rooms will probably fit well.
Good job, man! I'm sure you won't disappoint us. The few previews you showed us already had many things I wanted to see. I wonder how the full game is gonna be! Damn! I dreamed of playing this remake last week!
DIOS TE BENDIGA
Keep up the good work! Almost no one gets as far into a fan project s you do. ;D
Just take your time and finish at your own pace. There's no rush, make it as perfect as you want it. =)
Good luck!
Playing such an awesome game in better graphics and gameplay drives me crazy! I can only thank DoctorM64 for his work and wait.
Anyway, you're the best fan game maker I've ever seen, and very polite and fair too, we feel very free in your blog.
Thanks again for your game!
But it is really too bad that it only runs as a Windows executable. It would be so awesome if you could perhaps make a standalone Flash version for those with non-Windows computers who honestly would not get Microsoft on their machine for any fan remake.
I know you are working very very hard. I am not familiar with the software you are using so I don't know if it would be simple.
Keep going onwards and please don't think ever on giving up!
Godspeed!
DoctorM64, be careful about possible bugs, they happen in many games. I'm sure you will.
I'm waiting as patiently as I can. ;D
