Progress, and challenge mode

There was a lot of progress with Zeta Metroids. Right now they walk, crouch, jump and do a horrendously animated claw attack (soon to be redrawn). I just realized that since this is a ground based enemy, it will require much more testing than the floating ones. Specially when the environment limits the Metroid´s movement, there´s room for exploits.

So, last time I mentioned Challenge Mode. And there were many cool suggestions about it, and the possible escape sequence (thanks!!!). Here´s what I have planned so far for this mode:
- It will be available after completing the normal game once.
- All the lava will be gone, so you can explore freely.
- The item and Metroid placement will be changed.
- There will be extra Metroid fights, even maybe more than one at the same time.
- A boss rush mode could be unlocked after completing Challenge Mode.

One thing I know for sure, challenge mode will be done after the game is finished. This means I´ll release the game once it´s completed, and challenge mode will be done in the first update. This way I´ll be fixing all the details you find in the game, and add the new mode in the update.

I want to thank you all for the great feedback of these last posts, and for the patience you have with this project. If there´s something you´d like to suggest for Challenge Mode, feel free to post it.

yes! i love your decisions on challenge mode. And I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the Zeta's look like. I hope they leap around at least, because even the omega in fusion liked to jump.

Did you finish the Gammas? you said they needed fixing.

If your expanding the original map for challenge modem, you should (and if you have already, which you probably have, then completely ignore this) add a water area, and a large one too, so that getting the gravity suit makes more sense.

awesome suggestion about adding an underwater area for the purpose of the gravity suit. I think it would be more consistent with the game though if it was lava.

Its really good to hear that your nearing completion on your Zetas :P and challenge mode looks like it will add some good replay value...

something that i wanted to throw out there (i'm sure you have thought of this) is that since challenge mode is going to be very non-linear you should add special achievements just for challenge mode (if you do achievements).

I wonder... you haven't said Anything about the NCFC since July. Have you a demo or a Zeta video cooked up for us?

correct me if i'm wrong but i thought Dr.M said that the 2ned area would be a water facility of some kind??

That sounds amazing! Like a whole other game once you beat it once. With Metroid SR388 down the toilet and Metroid Subzero not showing any progress your our last hope for an awesome fan-made 2-D Metroid game. But, it looks like your stacking up to it so far!

Hello, I follow your work since several years and it gonna be amazing !
GOOD WORK !! AWESOME !!
By the way, are you going to make a "justin bailey" mode for challenge ? I mean armorless samus with some change on gravity effects, taking more damage when hit. Something like an hardcore mode ?
PS : sorry for my english.

From a design point, good decision. Rolling out bug fixes along with a new mode which doesn't affect original gameplay will improve the experience for existing players, and hopefully draw in new ones/recommendations.

I don't know if you have already added this to the game, but maybe one or two Torizo statues could be mini bosses.
Anonymous said…
So, no-go on the 'lost chapter,' huh? Sweet. Either way, it'll be awesome. I second the "justin bailey" idea. And the torizo idea, but obviously not all of them.

Great Plans Doc!

I'm glad you are considering some fights where you have to face more than one metroid at the same time.

I also like your idea of taking away the lava in the challenge mode and moving the items around, I think that's a very clever and artistic idea for challenge mode.

I curious where you weigh in at on an escape sequence as of now?
Anonymous said…
That idea for the challenge mode is pretty cool! Will the challenge mode be non-linear? That way you can transform Metroid 2 to a more Super Metroid style, but also maintain the main game intact in normal mode. Challenge mode could even feature new items(preferably something new, not recycled from other Metroid games).

There could be a "Escape Rush" mode, where you just made timed levels that you finished and went to the nexts ones, until you finish them all(or die...).
Could have various courses, like an easy one, a medium one, a hard one, and an extreme course that the minimal error would spell doom to Samus.

In the "To Escape or Not to Escape" comments, I came across a post of what I thought to be an excellent idea for boss rush mode, which was going from one boss room to the next with an escape sequence in between each room. That would be frikken awesome! Samus should at least have morph ball, bombs, power grip and normal missiles for Boss Rush IMO. Also, I like the Torizo statue idea, and the idea for the underwater enviornment being mostly "underlava" instead, since the gravity suit protects you from lava; there's never been an underlava area done in metroid before! It would be awesome! Love all your progress so far. Keep up the great work!

I'm loving everything you've been up to for the past few years. There's only one thing I'd like to see thrown up on the blog, that being a map of your progress. No seriously, like a real map of the game. You put up one before that showed your tower you've been working on recently, but I think a world map would be the best way to display your overall aesthetic progress to the people. That would also limit your need to create new trailers so often to shut people up, although I do like those too.

Come on you have to add something new onto the story of the game. Like the space pirate mothership in mzm. Plz you seriosly need that that's were you should have an escape sequence so you can have one in normal mode and then in challange mode you can you can escape from sr388 and the "mysterios other planet"

FOR CHALLANGE MODE, PLEASE CREATE

An Extra area to explore with an exclusive boss.

PLEASE!!!
Anonymous said…
Why not make an area filled with ruins of a civilisation that was not of the Chozo and not in the original plot line of the Metroid series? If you are creative enough, you can make an area filled with statues of a different race of beings that won't effect the story line, but will keep the players who visist the area wondering on who they were and what kind of realationship they had with the Chozo. (Obviously one shouldn't mess around too much with the plot of the series, but I think doing this little thing will make the exploration more exiting. After all, the entire metroid series is based around exploration, so why not give the game a little "new flare" if you know what I mean.)

This is AmyYatesRIP saying I'm glad you're still alive and kickin'. I'm glad the Zetas are working well, and I'm glad about the decisions you've made about hard mode. Anyway, when you do the Omegas, you should make things easy for yourself by just using the sprite(s) from Metroid Fusion, assuming you can find it/them, which you probably can. That way, all you need to do for them is the animations and whatnot. See you next mission!

Hello. I stumbled across this game when I was playing metroid music. I recently downloaded a Metroid 2 rom and I saw this and I nearly died in excitement. It looks like you have made the best metroid game ever! I have one suggestion for your challenge mode. I think it would be cool if you add a timed run mode for it and allow people to post their scores on different difficulties. Then there will be highscores and there could be some kinda achievement for getting really low times on it or something. It's just an idea. When this game if finished, do you have plans for any other metroid remakes? If you do them I would love to submit ideas to you once I finish beating the originals. I have almost finished the series. You rock!!!
Anonymous said…
I second the idea of a leaderboard. It's one thing to beat your own fastest time, it's another entirely to see how fast everyone else can play. It'll give people extra incentive to sequence break.

Also, I don't know if you plan on including power bombs or not, but if you do, please actually make use of them. Zero Mission didn't give them to you until the very very end of the game, and the only real use they had was to break out of Chozodia to go back and get 100%. I thought that was really lame. If you're going to add an item, give us more than one opportunity to use it.
SpiderTECH said…
OK I get the non-linear idea of taking the lava out for challenge mode, but then what use is the gravity suit if the gravity suit protects you from lava. What if instead of coding the on/off for lava, you just have the Gravity Suit earlier on in the game only for Challenge Mode. The Lava would make it harder to see which in of itself is a challenge.
Unknown said…
I think your idea for challenge mode is perfect. I mean even if you take out all the lava, there would still be the underwater area, and you could keep all the water/lava in there, making the gravity suit necessary still, or you could simply remove the gravity suit from challenge mode all together. after all, it wasn't in the original.
Firespawn7 said…
Beyond finishing the Zetas, is it only the Omega and Queen metroids left in order to finish the game? or are there still more tiles to place and enemies to sprite?
Palamon said…
I don't think the gravity suit should protect you from the progress-blocking Lava, only stationary pools of lava. Kind of like in Super Metroid, the difference between the stationary pool of lava you have to swim through using the gravity suit to get to Ridley's Lair and the super heated Lava that flowed up and down inside Ridley's Lair that still hurt you.

That being said, if you were insistent on the gravity suit protecting you from the progress blocking lava, I think getting the gravity suit much earlier would be pretty cool (adding to the sequence breaking aspect). Dare I say it, you could even get the gravity suit before you get the Varia suit?! and just have the damage severely reduced from the lava instead of completely negated... Making every lava sequence break a timed course. As a minor side note, the lava acts as a good "did I get them all in this area?" indicator without actually putting it on the map.

That being said, are you going to have a list of all the powerups and metroids in a given map area. I really liked that in MZM. It made 100% runs not annoying by eliminating the need to externally book keep on the items I got, while still leaving the specific location of the items a secret.

I suggest putting a metroid counter in this section as well. Especially in Challenge mode, it will keep the metroid hunting in the right general area instead of missing one cleverly placed guy in the beginning then driving yourself mad trying to find him by searching through the entire game.
Sudtrap said…
Awesome! Really awesome! I'd recommend changing some of the areas in challenge area, perhaps submerging an area under water, and heating other areas.
Anonymous said…
Glad to hear you'll focus on the challenge mode 'after' finishing the proper game, as that's what I'm interested in.

Still... it's not a bad idea either. It'll give your remake a ton of re-playability. Dare I say, taking it beyond the fan-made territory of simply "amazing" into outright "legendary".

Oh, and any chance we could get a percentage progress report soon? I don't expect a release date, but it'd be good to know how much you feel is left to do.
Anonymous said…
I think what the doc meant by saying "All the lava will be gone, so you can explore freely." is that the progress blocking lava will be gone, but the "normal" lava will remain, so the gravity suit is not useless.

Changing existing areas, like suggested above, would be cool also(like adding 'hotness', lava, water, indestructable rocks that force you to find other ways, new passages to create these other ways, etc...).

And WINOX suggested above a mode where you play with a weaker character, it would be cool if it was the last GFed Trooper that survived the SR388 expeditions, and you played with him to see how far can he go...

I find myself wondering something for challenge mode. We all know that metroids change after a time. While this may be a difficult possibility to include, it is a suggestion only for the challenge mode. I propose that in challenge mode, the feeling of rushing to get to the new area is more important. based on physical game play time, the longer you wait, the further into evolution the metroids will become, thus the more dangerous it is. I think, honestly that this would put a huge factor of additional challenge into the game. I understand programming could be an issue, and most certianly will be for this would be difficult to accomplish, however if it could be done, that would put a bit of extra oomph behind the challenging mode.

If you're having trouble fitting huge zetas in some of the caves you've built, why not just make the caves themselves bigger?

Maybe add some platforms that the Zeta can jump to, and which Samus can also use to get in a better position.

I just think that fighting a huge enemy like the zetas should be done in a larger area (it can still feel cramped for the zeta, but it will need room to maneuver...)

Anyway, something to think about.

Dunno if you'd think it's a good idea but maybe unlocking the Fusion Suit as an alternate costume would be a good idea, it would be quite interesting seeing Samus on SR388 with the Fusion Suit. So if you don't think the Fusion Suit would be a good idea than it's ok.

Ive been following this project waiting for the release metroid 2 is ace and its not well known really and i have a suggestion for your challenge mode you could have torizos them statue guardians protecting some of the better items like plasma ice and spazer beams. you could put them in the normal game i was proper gutted after arachanus coz there was no more bosses accept omegas and the queen.

also you could add in the zero suit you get down to your last energy tank then your suit is destroyed forcing you to flee and heal before being able to continue you could even have the suit recharge itself to avoid getting trapped in rooms that require the suit to enter.

sorry more ideas for challenge mode you could replace normal enemies with x parasite versions this could create your escape scene having killed the queen the x parasites ripidly take control of the planet forcing you to escape.
Unknown said…
This was sortof mentioned in the previous post, but not exactly in the same way. I've been talking about the idea of adding a secret optional boss into the game (if not after you kill the queen then just at some point), and I've read others' comments about X parasites, and I thought to myself, what a great idea, since X parasites technically were on SR388 during Metroid II. Samus doesn't have the Fusion Suit though, so they hurt her. Anyway, my fantasy secret/optional/extra boss for the game would be an X-infected Torizo statue. Think about it! There was one in Metroid Fusion that gave you the wide beam, but it would even cooler if this one first fought you at full power in its Torizo form, and then after an epic battle, you think all is well, but then the core is revealed! Floating around, spewing its airborne parasitic x goop all over you. And I just thought, you could add an entire optional AREA full of X- Parasites, and then after Samus hunts down and kills the X-infected Torizo statue, she will get the X-Beam, which allows her to kill normal x with her regular beam, thereby allowing her to survive in the optional area (which would also be cleverly hidden). Haha sorry about the long post. This would slightly contradict the Metroid Fusion story-line, since Samus mentions in Fusion that her first encounter with the x took place after Super Metroid, but I still think it would be cool though. Obviously the game will kick ass either way though.

Hola Doc!

saludos

Sir_Poeta.

i like Russel's idea, but why not instead make an area where the space pirates are collecting metroids, you have to kill the metroids, and destroy the ship, perhaps fighting meta-ridly along the way.

One idea you might want to consider is adding in is a difficulty setting for Challenge mode. From Normal which would be a little more difficult than the actual game, to Lunatic mode which would be like a death sentence. Faster Metroids and other bosses with very very few missals and no life upgrades.

Call me a masochist but I would have a ball with that. >w<
Anonymous said…
In the challenge mode, what about diferent kinds of challenges, aside the normal, hard and very hard, challenges using specific upgrades, for example a "morph ball bomb challenge" the same challenge but you moust beat it just using morph ball and normal bombs, what do you think?
Anonymous said…
To those of you suggesting that Samus faces the X-parasites early, there are some problems with this angle...

1. If she faces the X-Parasite now, she'd effectively have no defense against them, just as she did when she met them at the start of metroid fusion.

2. On the other hand, The very fact that she saw one and somewhat let her guard down in fusion is the way that entire story begins. She had no idea what the X-parasite could do. If she knew about them and what they were capable of beforehand, she probably wouldn'tve let herself be infected then.

These 2 issues mainly apply if she actually fights the X-parasites. If she merely sees a Metroid munch on one (and we get a little cameo from this), then it's not such a big deal. If you're going with optional bosses here, I wouldn't give the X-parasite too much of a presence yet.

I think you should leave your own mark on your game. If your doing an extra mode, don't add metroid fights, make up your own metroid, or your own monster. That would be greatly appreciated.

Fusion Suit Upgrade Ideas (For another gameplay mode)
-------------------------
Note: Each Suit corresponds with a stage of the SR-388 Metroid's evolution patterns.

Fusion Suit - First introduced in Metroid Fusion. Exhibits all basic traits of infant metroids, save for the ability to harvest the life force from living creatures.

Powers granted - Ability to harvest x-parasites for energy and ammunition.

Alpha Fusion Suit - Suit evolution to Alpha Metroid phase.

Powers granted - Damage from energy neutralized. Damage from ballistics on self increased to 5x effectiveness.

Gamma Fusion Suit - Suit evolution to Gamma Metroid phase.

Powers granted - Electric Syphon - Hit enemies with a electric beam and use them as grapple points. Damage from ballistics on self decreased to 4x effectiveness.

Zeta Fusion Suit - Suit evolution to Zeta Metroid phase.

Powers granted - Jump height and wall-kicking distance increased. Plasma Beam effect engaged.
Damage from ballistics on self decreased to 3x effectiveness. Lava damaged halved.

Omega Fusion Suit - Suit evolution to Omega Metroid phase.

Powers granted - Screw attack effect engaged.Plasma Beam effect power doubled. Damage from ballistics on self decreased to 2x effectiveness. Lava damaged nullified.

This would be something of a "Fusion Mode" if you will. Not to be taken seriously until all other angles of the project are completed, if it is taken seriously at all.
Anonymous said…
Ok well that was a big waste of a post. You guys do realize this is a Metroid 2 remake not Metroid 5. The Fusion suit was only introduced into Metroid 4 (Fusion) as a way to combat and protect Samus from the X-Parasites and only because she was infected with one which happens after the events of Super Metroid way after Metroid 2. So people unless this games title changes to AM4R, please stop requesting the Fusion Suit as an actual in game item. Now if we want to talk Suit options how about ones within the story. From what I understand the events in the Prime series happend between Metroid 1 (Zero) and Metroid 2. So lets get some requests for Zero Suit, Phazon Suit, Light/Dark Suit, and the Corruption Suit (whatever its called), at least those are within the storyline.
Unknown said…
phazon suit and the PED suit are useless because there's no more phazon in the universe after Metroid Prime 3 and dark suit and light suit are useless because they only protect you from dark aether's atmosphere and dark aether disappears when you finish Metroid Prime 2.
Palamon said…
Besides maybe a Flight Suit Justin Bailey type option, I don't think any other kind of suit modification would be appropriate. I mean the gravity suit is being added as an extra suit that wasn't in the first game.

An interesting thing that you could put in Challenge mode is the removal of the combined beams, so you had to choose which beam you wanted to have, but had to give up the other ones.
I always liked the additional challenge M1 and M2 made you do when you came up to a new beam, made you ask, should I get it, or should I keep the beam that I have... weak but easy to aim spazer, or powerful, hard to aim plasma? And in the end, you have to equip just ice beam.

Made the weapons tower with all the beams kind of like a weapon store outlet with a huge selection.

I know with MZM using combined beams, taking it away for challenge mode seems a little out of place, but if you did a flight suit version, who's to say she can't have a less powerful gun that can't combine beams.

3 suits is enough... any more would make the game too easy

That and Dr.m already said that there will be no X in this game so stop asking

In your next trailer or preview, if you would make one at all, could you let us hear some of the music? The music in the original terrified me, these songs in particular:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9IbS0PiLXc&feature=PlayList&p=F2101F8A7650A7A9&index=3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNx3euo6KcU&feature=PlayList&p=F2101F8A7650A7A9&index=5

I was wondering how you've remixed these songs, considering these are random atmospheric monster noises. Having just one song other than Surface Runner, even if it's a few seconds, would be awesome.

I love the gameplay of Metroid II a lot, but the music in the caverns terrifies me. If it's remixed in a bit techno-y way, it'd be all right, though...

I'm the guy who made the
Alpha/Gamma/Zeta/Omega Fusion Suit post. Just for clarity, please note the inclusion of the words "For another gameplay mode". Also note the ending paragraph telling everyone not to take me too seriously. Well, I suppose you all managed that much. Still, please don't label my ideas as "a big waste of a post". They might not be directly relevant to the main aspect of the game, but they would bring some some interesting things to the table IN ANOTHER MODE OF PLAY and I put a lot of thought into them.

how about early in challenge mode you get chased by like an omega metroid through a coridoor, and thats an escape run? like, Sax style
John said…
meta-ridleys, phazons, X, space-pirates. Really? Come on.

Challenge mode ideas that ring simple and effective are:

adding heat/lava/water/cold to rooms.

switch main items' locations or hiding them in different locations,
requiring "imaginative gameplay".
Anonymous said…
The point of a challenge mode isn't to introduce new enemies and levels. It's to make your items less effective, put more enemies in the same area, and generally change the way you play the same game.

For example: Your first Metroid encounter is fighting two Alphas simultaneously, with fewer missiles that do half as much damage. This forces one of two things: finding more items to compensate or improving your skill. And since this is a "challenge" mode, there should be fewer items to find in order to encourage the latter.

A second example of a challenge would be super-heating a few rooms before the Varia suit, so you either have to sprint through the heat or find a back door in. Like John said, small alterations that require extra skill and thought.
Erik Schow said…
I'm a little confused — in Metroid II, Zeta metroids floated around like their previous incarnations, due to the fact that their legs were too short to reach the ground. Here you have them walking? In my opinion, that would make them too easy, because in MII the challenge came from their highly-damaging, difficult-to-avoid ram attacks, combined with their evasion and invulnerability from all but one side. How do you plan to make them a threat now? If they merely amble about, that entire last point (Zetas are hard to hurt) goes out the window.

Or, is that your intent, to balance the difficulty progression more? In the original, Zetas were far more difficult than Omegas. Are you addressing that flaw by weakening the Zetas instead of strengthening the Omegas to prevent the game from becoming too challenging?

Regardless of the answers, I'm eagerly awaiting this game. MII is my favorite Metroid game, and it needs to be done justice.

I think for Challenge Mode, some of the environments should be shifted around for the optimal difficulty.

And if you're following a Hard Mode example, what is it like? (Cutting expansions in half, enemy double HP, etc.?)
SamusRisng said…
*sigh* When I was talking about the Fusion Suit being an alternate costume in the game that's all I was talking about. Like in Metroid Prime 1, I didn't mean we should think of some wacky powers for it. I just thought it would be interesting for Samus to be running around on SR388 with the Fusion Suit. Just for cosmetic effects. Although I do agree seeing a Metroid attacking an X Parasite would be quite interesting...as long as Samus doesn't fight the X Parasite.
SamusRisng said…
Also, having Samus see a Metroid attacking an X Parasite and easily dispatching it would provide an anwser as to how the scientists in Fusion were able to determine that a Metroid Vaccine would have a chance of having a positive effect. She could have reported that, but then again, the fact that she would have seen an X Parasite would conflict with the fact that she was "attacked by an organism that she had never seen before" So maybe it wouldn't be a good idea after all.
Erik Schow said…
What exactly will boss rush mode entail? Unless you plan to add a ton more, you've only got the Queen and maybe Arachnus.

Or is it that you just have the player fight every single Metroid in the game consecutively? I guess some really hardcore players would enjoy that, like myself, though I hope there will be enough missiles...
Anonymous said…
Hey, I was the one who dropped the comments on 'why' dropping the X-parasite in the game is a continuity busting idea if not done right. Having said that, if you do want to add it in, I'd suggest you do so like this.

You reach one of the normal areas where you fight an alpha metroid. In its place is a single X-parasite. It hovers there for a second or 2, getting ready to jump samus. Before it even has the chance to make such a move, a regular metroid larva bursts out of the ground, grabs it in its talons, and sucks it up. The extra energy granted to the metroid activates its evolution, and we see it shed its shell and morph into a nice little alpha metroid.

From this, it could be suggested that feasting on the X-parasite gives them a nice little energy boost and helps in the process of natural metroid evolution, but samus would still effectively have no real idea what it is she just saw. Leaving a mystery that is resolved in fusion.

This is about the only way I could think of implementing X without breaking the established story.
Palamon said…
I'm not much of a fan of including X-parasites in the M2R (mainly because I hated the gameplay of fusion)

However, Anonymous brings up a great idea for the first metroid encounter. I think it would be cool to see the Metroids feed on the indigenous life to show how they evolve. Kind of a kick back to the metroid hatchling feeding off the sidehopper in super metroid.

At the first encounter, Samus could either encounter a tough enemy which the metroid dispatches before samus can handle it, or,

An interesting idea for Challenge mode, have Samus encounter a regular metroid before she gets the ice beam, then has to run away from it until she encounters another, more tasty option for the metroid to gobble on, then evolve into an alpha.

I think this is a good idea for a short story telling semi-cut scene.

While I understand the multitude of postings requesting that X paracites somehow be involved, I have to say that it will certaintly break continuity. If anyone cares to remember, in Fusion, Samus says that she had never SEEN that creature before. If theyhave to be placed in, it could be near the end, the "walls" that the metroid eats through, what they consume in the larval stage, that's the "nesting" for the paracites. They would start out microscopic paracitic organisms. Samus would have had no reason to look twice at it other then a form of bacterial organism that wasn't going to affect her. The metroid population was so high, the x didn't even have the chance, or the option of becoming a threat at that point. She wouldn't have scanned, or cared two hoots about the organizms at that point. Having an organism, even for a few seconds show up, breaks the "I never saw it before" timeline. Maybe for challenge mode, but not for the actual story mode. The very thought, would ruin the reason of remaking the game.

Who cares! Why not make Metroid 2 Remake as SEMI-REMAKE, by breaking the story line a little. Come on, I want something NEW!

Omega Fusion Suit idea guy again. I'm noticing a bunch of posts ruling out the inclusion of the X species because Samus would have to see them. In response to this I ask this question: What if she doesn't HAVE to see them? Who says she actually sees something if it's part of a scene being acted out in the background? In the old Super Metroid comics the last surviving Chozo explains to the annoying blue suit-wearing guy following Samus around that her power suit will protect her from harm as long as she stays focused on her mission. Like HYPER-focused. When I'm hyper-focused on something, I have a tendency to tune most other things out, no matter how crazy those things are. Not to say Samus isn't observant of her surroundings of course, but she DOES miss things here and there.

"Who cares! Why not make Metroid 2 Remake as SEMI-REMAKE, by breaking the story line a little. Come on, I want something NEW!" Ahem...to you good sir I have a few things to say. One, that is a horrible idea. Two, if it was adapted then it would no longer be metroid in my opinion. Three, there will be plenty of new things already considering what the creator of the remake has said. Four, there's absolutely no reason to break such a great story. Five, you are a retard for even suggesting this. I think that's about it. SamusRisng signing off!

Oh and as for the metroid evolution by gaining nourishment from another creature. I've always wanted to see Samus have to run from a Metroid while she didn't have the Ice Beam so I say that you should implement that idea if you decide to do something with the Metroid's evolution being explained.

The Metroid evolutionary cycle is unique to Metroids in SR-388's ecosystem. Just by living out their lives on SR-388 or an ecosystem that perfectly replicates it (like the station), they will evolve in that manner. The cause for their evolution has already been explained. Bit of a killjoy argument, but that's how it is.
I know I'm late to say this, but for an escape theme, it MUST have some sort of remix of the "Metroid Escape Theme" (ya know, the one at the end of Metroid 1, Zero Mission, and Prime 2: Echoes)
Forgive me for being OCD, but I wanted to REALLY clarify what escape music I was talking about for everyone.

I'm talking about these songs (not the Ridely remix used in Super and Fusion):

Looks like you are the last best hope for us fans to have a fan game made. I could be wrong but I can't find any current info on the other projects. I really hope put of all the attempts you come out with 1000% completion rate. I'm in talks with my brother right now about a possible Blaster Master fan game made from scratch. If I have any questions do you mind?

oh will we be able to run this on our psp as homebrew?

Oh come on! From what I understand the man barely has what it takes to to whip up the amazing stuff he has as it is! Cut him some slack! He's trying to do one thing, and one thing only: Remake Metroid II. Programming issues that have to do with bells and whistles for the game on ONE platform are one thing. Save the compatibility issues till the game's already fully finished for PCs. Worst comes to worst, you could always download the game, hack it to pieces, and reassemble it for a PSP. Not that he would like that much, but you could.

props to the post above.

It was a question people; simply asking whether or not it would be "able" to run on the PSP. Not a request to make a special version. I have no idea what would have to be done so it could run on the PSP. So please excuse my ignorance for asking a simple question. I'm just as impressed with the work that has gone into this game. and just wanted to know when all is said and done if I take the file and try to run it through homebrew will it work? Nothing else. Are you always so intense where your eyesballs poping out of your sockets when you typed that response up?

Nope. I'm like one of those fake electric chairs in arcades that you try to hold on to hard enough to make smoke come out of. If you try, it's relatively easy to get smoke out of it, but there's no real benefit to the outcome. But hey! Try your luck anyway!

If you can play Metroid: Confrontation on your PSP, then you probably can play AM2R too.

Cool, I learned something new about Metroid, a rare occasion indeed (Well, until Metroid: Other M comes out), if it's common knowledge then why haven't I heard of it before? Anyways, thanks for explaining that so that I will know on future occasions ^_^. Do you know anything else I don't because I would love to learn about it.

For referance, I know the Manga, I know pretty much everything about fusion, and I know how Samus's powersuit works, I have a few theories as well but nothing I found to be confirmed and I know what most people would know from normally playing through the games.

i'm not sure if this conversation is over or not, but i'll say this anyway. me and my brother are BIG metroid fans, but we got introduced to the series a little to late, so we were'nt able to play the old games. so please do not include x-parasites, we never played the original metroid 2, we want to play an actual canon metroid game. so please dont add anything that samus wouldn't know about yet.

"forget beating the Dead Horse, just shoot it and get it over with. Then when you're finished, point the gun at yourself and shoot."

P.S. this is for everybody commenting on powersuit crap and "will this work on my (fill in whatever non-pc/mac/linux device here)"
PSP? How about some Wii homebrew? More people own Wiis than PSPs.

Realistically though, seeing that he's making this in GameMaker (hard to believe with such great quality) he won't be able to port it AFAIK.

To SamusRisng: I've played all the Metroid games, read the manga and all older comics, and played all the Super Metroid hacks that seemed to be worth anything from start to finish (with lots of help on forums, granted, but I did. Hey, those hacks are HARD!) I won't claim 100% accurate knowledge of canonical history and facts, but if you want to know something, I'd be happy to fill you in to the best of my ability. My youtube account is purplecowadoom. If you want to talk with me, I'll definitely get your message there.

---------------------------------

Nice idea. It really deserve to be implemented on the challenge mode.It would be nice to play and dont change the storyline at all

This idea introduce the need of killing the metroids faster
not in order to enable them to evolve too much, cuz u dont have too much missiles.

Also i have a question, u are going to use fusion´s omega sprites in this game aren´t u?
Just because that omega was way cool and theres no need to draw another one :D.

Congratulations 4 the game, i hope ull finish it soon :DD

I like the previews, and gameplay!
and I think this is a great job!
I'm very impressed ^.^
Hmmmm.
When your done making the game,
i think you should go to Nintendo,
and try to make the remake official,
so that we can all have it on gameboy! :D

I hope its not too much to ask but could we please see a progress report so we can have an idea about how long it will take to complete the game?

On the topic of beam stacking, I don't think you should have the beams stack up as you get them. Perhaps you could hide beam stacking items deep in the game. Each time you would get one, you would be able to stack one extra kind of beam to your shots. This would still partially keep the idea of having to choose which beam you want to use. Of course, these items would be placed in areas that would take tons of exploration to get to. This would also add some significance to the beam tower. On hard mode, you could get rid of these beam stack items and replace them with metroids or something else. I know this is a little off topic, but I thought I’d suggest it.

keep on the good work ;)

hmm maybe in challenge mode beams will not stack?

except maybe the wide beam... which could probably be moved to another location deeper into the tunnels

beam stacking ftw in normal mode :P
Dudeman said…
hmmm

i do not know about normal mode but what if beams did not stack in challenge mode... except maybe the wide beam. you wouldn't need to search for a beam every time u wanted to change... It would just be something you switched out in the item menu
