Introducing the official spriter

First of all, thanks to all the people who sent their work.
The criteria I used to choose among all the very talented people is how good they captured the style, and made sprites that would fit perfectly into the game.

So, the official spriter of the AM2R project is: Hyrule_SwordsMan

HSM is now focusing on the enemy sprites, while I code the AI. I also took some time to balance out the stacked beam system, it was too overpowered.
After all the enemies are done, the Metroids come next... and that´s where the fun begins.

That's a terrible idea. All you'd end up doing is stealing thunder from each other. Release at least a week apart, a week's worth of bug-testing never hurt anyone.

Dude, this is pretty awesome. I love the Metroid series(especially Prime 1 & 2) and have always wondered if their were plans to remake Metroid 2 deep within EAD or Retro. The original game was rather difficult compared to the other Metroids, and the sound was god-awful. However, your remake in GM7 is absolutely glorious. It definitely feels like Zero Mission. Additionally, the usage of Metroid Metal on your Youtube clip was amazing. I wonder if you could get them to make some original songs for your final build. . . . When considering music, don't overlook ocremix.com either, they have some pretty dynamic stuff along with a huge mixing community that would no doubt be interested in your work. Finally, I was pleased to see you are taking name suggestions, for when I first heard of AM2R, I thought the name was terrible. Therefore, I suggest "Metroid Evolution." The title would be both a reference to the rebirth of the game and the evolutionary chain followed by the metroids within the game. Keep up the amazing work! (I posted this by accident of one of the older blogs)

I suggested "Metroid Evolution" earlier, but I thought of a few more if you didn't like that one.
- Metroid: Obliteration
(Pretty much the same as your "Metroid: Eradication)
- Metroid: Annihilation
(Same thing as above)
- Metroid: Second Mission
(I swore I heard someone say this, so I'm just passing it on)
- Metroidmon

Maybe "Metroid Requiem"

I think it sounds good, and fits the lonely/dark atmosphere of metroid rather than "metroid carnage" or "obliteration" or any gory massacre name.

Yeah dude, "Metroid Requiem" is a good call. It definitely fits the metroid attitude and feeling. Metroid is about darkness and exploration, not violence. (Although I still like "Metroid Evolution" the most)

I was wondering if you were going to add any cutscenes or story sequences. Although the hard part about that would be to keep the character of samus and the storyline consistent with other games. From what I understand, metroid's origional theme was isolation, so there wouldn't have to be too much in there. Maybe just a refresher in the beginning.

I don't know how hard that is to do for game programing, but I thought it would be a nice touch.

Or you could add in a new feature. Like upon returning to samus' ship, you could have logs with subtle refrences to hidden locations or a simple easter egg depending on how many metroids you've killed. It would be hard not to annoy the hardcore fans, but totally badass if done correctly. Then people could be like "woah, I wasn't expecting that!" Metroid games do have their awesome twists :)

Oh forgot to mention: you're awesome!

thats a cool idea about the cutscenes. . . . they don't have to be super detailed or anything, they could be as simple as the ones in Fusion or Zero Mission. They could merely help illustrate the original Metroid II: ROS story. As for the easter eggs and logs, they could be very interesting, but DON'T overdo them. A couple sutble references to Fusion or Super Metroid (Both Successors to Metroid 2 in the Metroid Timeline) could be excellent. For instance, you could show a metroid chase down an x parasite. Or you could make another Torizo battle. Just some ideas. When developing Samus's techniques, don't forget to consider the power bomb charge combos and crsytal flash (both from super metroid). While they're not extremely useful, they're very cool, and can add some depth to boss strategy. And I saw a comment on one of your youtube movies that said not to include Ridely in the final game. I'm sure you know this, but for other people reading this, space pirates (and thus Ridely) were univolved in Metroid 2. Please keep it that way. Thanks, and please continue to beast it up.

Some cutscenes would be nice, Keep it simple like in the Metroid Fusion style, where you have literally only a few shots for the appearences of special enemies (like the first time you'll face an Alpha/Gamma/Zeta/Omega/Queen Metroid), and an introduction and ending.

Beyond that, try to stick with the isolated feeling that made the game work. Keep the space pirates uninvolved and leave Samus as the only sentient non-feral being on the planet.

Oh, and if possible, try to provide an explanation for her return to no items. In Super Metroid, it was implied that she deactivated them and they were then destroyed in the lab. We have no idea why she's missing things in Metroid 2, though. Perhaps they were donated to the Federation for research?

It doesn't need any damn cutscenes, next you fools will be asking him to make it interface with Metroid Prime 3 or something.

While the demo is great, the music doesn't give off a Metroid 2 feeling of isolation and eeriness. Also techno-Ridley...nuh-uh.

Metroid II did not come after Super Metroid or Metroid Fusion. It came before them. Which is why they are also called Metroid 3 and 4 respectively.

You are doing a nice work, remember to work out very hard with the music because metroid 2 music is awful...

And remember to make Omega Metroids very massive and fearsome.

I wonder when you will finish a next demo version or the full one ;)

Metroid: Second Mission would give the project continuity with Zero Mission, especially fitting due to the similar look.

Assuming you don't have your heart set on any of the above suggestions, I'd like to propose "Metroid: the Hive" as the title. Its simple, distinctive, and identifies a story element (ie, a hive of eusocial metroids) that doesn't exist in any of the other games.

Also, as others have said, needs moar creepy music. A suggestion; maybe you can fill one of the ruins areas with fossilized chozo skeletons (and preserved corpses in medical cells, perhaps), metroid resin, and signs of ruin and decay, but remix the upbeat, happy-sounding ruins music from M2 for it. Will totally fuck with players' heads.

For the most part, though, the music should be creepy.

I like the new graphics you're posting up. I like the idea of making the title "Metroid- Second Mission". I remember last month on a forum, I considered the name "Metroid 2 Revived: In the Darkness", and a couple of guys agreed. The sense of that was that it was a revived version of Metroid 2, and the caverns were full of darkness.

You remember how you said that Metroid Fusion had ONE level that is based on the planet SR-388? Well, actually all of the levels from that game are based off different areas from Metroid II. Almost all the enemies from Metroid II re-appear in Fusion at some point. If you look at the original sprites against the fusion sprites you'll see what I mean. GREAT job by the way.

Adding x-parasites in the would be cool but if you did then what sort of upgrade to samus's suit would you suggest that could counter My advice would be to add the fusion suit as an optional upgrade but strongly advised to protect against them.
