No future for AM2R

Nintendo of America, Inc. has filed a takedown request under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). I received the request on my personal email, so I'm complying with their requests.

There will be no more AM2R updates, and no more releases under any platform.

Thank you for the support during all these years.

Thank you DoctorM64, thank you and your group of talented friends for all the hard work and dedication you've put into this project, it's been a fantastic journey, hasn't it?

It's always great to see a project receive it's closure, but sadly it ended on such a bad note though. I do understand that Nintendo is in their legal rights to aggressively send any DMCAs to protect their IPs, but.. was it really justified? You never asked anyone to donate you money to help support your project, you were fair and gave a beloved IP a superb treatment in a very respectful and honorable way as possible.

I'm not sure if there is anything else you wanted to fix, change or possibly add something else to the fan game. However if you don't have any more ideas to implement into your project then I am also content with the fan game being completed with it's last update. I do hope Nintendo will one day take to consideration that there can be good karma within the fan community that is filled with passionate and talented individuals like yourself who takes their time out of their days to make fan games, not for profits, but for love.

P.S- I'll be looking forward to seeing what kind of new project you want to tackle on next! Perhaps going far back to the 1993 Mario Bros. but turn it into a full open 2D underground exploration without the familiar power ups, but with tools like a wrench, plunger and hammer that you can store in your plumber tool box's inventory for opening and closing pipes, solving puzzles and thwarting enemies. Who knows!

See you next mission~

Seriously though, swap the character sprite and remove the word metroid: viola new game. Then I'd go one step further and sell it on steam. Why not? Fan made metroid-vania titles are a hot commodity right now and this is the best I've ever played-- even better than the excellent Axiom Verge and better than many of Nintendo's own Metroid titles!

This is a truly amazing game and I had a blast playing it. I go back and play Metroid every few years and now I'll be adding this to the rotation. It might not be "official" but I'll be considering this part of the series from here on out. Great work on an awesome game. Now go take my advice and stick it to the man.

JSYK, The reason AM2R was taken down was actually due to the law, and that Metroid could become public property, and thus Nintendo loses all those exclusive rights to Metroid.

Regardless, they should at least give you compensation since you made a great fan creation and practically dooming any remake coming from Nintendo themselves since they'd most likely just copy you. At least give this guy some $100K for this and show that you actually would play this at Nintendo of America Headquarters.

To be completely honest, if I were in your shoes, I'd just go about my business and fight Nintendo if it came down to it. But then again, you probably have a lot more to lose than I do, so.

that's just too bad. I wish they'd reconsider their decision and let you at least distribute the game freely. Seriously, unless they're planning on releasing an official Metroid 2 remake, you're not interfering with their business. If much, you're promoting the franchise even further. Well, whatever. I hope that, after the immense success that was AM2R, they remember why they have Samus as one of their most iconic characters

I'm gonna be honest with you: you did an excelent job... I didn't want to play the original game because I felt it was really slow (also, black and white didn't help that much...). But this remake was beautiful... Beat it with 95%, and I'm gonna 100% it. For real, if they don't give you a job offer, then they're really stupid... Btw, I loved the ending song :)

The character, setting, and some of the audiovisual assets may belong to Nintendo under various legal protections (copyright and trademark), but the scenario and the programming is yours. Nintendo doesn't have any claim to a game about a monster hunter clearing out a cave filled with deadly beasts; the concept is fairly generic.

I'd like to paint a picture for you: a genre shift into Fantasy.

A team of miners descended into a recently uncovered series of caves, but hasn't been heard from in several days. The local law enforcement sent a team of soldiers to rescue them, but again... no word. The sounds of roaring monsters cried out from the darkness and crawled towards the surface. At great expense, the city was forced to hire a professional dragonslayer--Bailey (Heh heh heh).
Clad in full platemail to protect herself from the flames and acid of her prey, Bailey wields a book of magic from which she launches eldritch blasts (replacement for the beam weapon) mounted on a crossbow which is needed to pierce the underhides of dragons since they are immune to magic (replacement for the missles). She also has a spell which transforms her into a small lizard (replacement for morph ball) which she uses to navigate small spaces. While transformed she can carve explosive runes into the ground with her claws (bombs) and can climb walls (spider ball), as well as 'interface' with ancient dragon ruins deep in the mines.
Bailey's armor is protected by a set of amulets made of solidified ether to deflect damage against her person (replacement for energy tanks). It can also acquire enchantments to protect against extreme temperatures (replacement for Varia) or magnetic fields (replacement for Gravity). Her goal? Kill all of the dragons in the mines to save the town above (although... a sneaky lizard slipped out and exterminated everybody; change the scavenger ship to a town hall and keep the same events up there).

You don't even have to remove the log with that scenario; just have her analyzing how dragons evolve from whelps to wyrms. Don't like dragons? Want to go with a different genre? Go for it!
That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure you could come up with something better with a little time and effort. The point is this: Metroid 2 didn't really have a story. Your game does. Tweak the story, possibly changing the genre in the process, and come up with new visual and audio assets to go with it. Then Nintendo will have no grounds to stand on, since it would legitimately be your game. Gameplay elements (platforming, destructible environments, having to kill X creatures to advance, control schemes) are too general to be copywritten; there have been plenty of games which capture the essence of a famous IP while telling their own story. AM2R could be the larval form of another game like that.
Text-only-Tech said…
Perhaps the greatest praise your work could receive is to be shut down by the holders of the IP. Many fan projects don't even get the "owners" to take notice, but to be seen as a threat? Kudos to you, good sir.

For people saying "Be more like SEGA" I suggest you look up SORR (Streets of Rage Remake). Shortly after v5 was released to the public, SEGA got the lawyers involved and it has officially been terminated, with only a 3rd party community maintaining it. Much like AM2R it was simply too good for its own, well, good.

Sadly this is just the way of business now. They could have (and should have) endorsed it, but there's so many complications when it comes to defending IP that this may well have been seen as the only viable option. Voting with your proverbial wallets won't change much, since the Metriod (and SoR) IP is more valuable than a few customers, thus more important for them to protect.

Regardless, this is the Internet - your work is out there now and it won't be disappearing. These comments alone should be proof enough that it wasn't in vain.

Like the Anon above the one on top of my entry, you have the base game data, change the textures make new bosses with puzzle aspects that make you think and discover its damage point, make the game bigger and sure the new sprites will take time but they'll be your intellectual property once the game serves as fair use even if the game is similar to Metroid 2, but its internal aspects, characters, decypherable and entertaining story that could have its own uniqueness that I would support if you did continue your progress and surpass the Metroid thirst we fans have that game companies will not extinguish with all the development and testing time wasted. I gladly would give my ideas since I am poor in designing but great in suggesting innovation.

Milton, I regret that Nintendo hasn't allowed to continue development of the project.
I want to deliver the speech...
I carefully watched updates of the Project AM2R, I have played personally, I was delighted, it is the real masterpiece what couldn't create Nintendo earlier. I am sincerely sorry that DMCA has acted this way with your project. I is proud believed that in future AM2R will take the place of honor among games of the Metroid series and will develop further. I want to thank you for all efforts done by you in 10 years and never I will forget it.
I very much didn't want that everything has ended so sadly. All that now I can make it to attract attention of retro-gamers from Russia and to transfer AM2R, that they could estimate her. I have kept all your versions of AM2R and they will always be with me until the end of my days.

-Sincerely your loyal fan Achiro...

TO everybody complaining about the fact that nintendo only NOW filed the DMCA then allow me to enlighten you.

Nintendo HAD TO. U.S. Trademark laws say that if they don't protect their IP, EVEN ONCE, then they lose ALL right to EVER defend it again. That means that as soon as this was published it forced them to act even though it was released for free. Talking about making it, even actually making it, DO NOT threaten the trademark. This is not Nintendo being a jerk. This is Nintendo guarding and protecting a likely multi-million dollar value IP.

This sucks, man, however it's a good thing you created such a flawless, amazing, true to the original but better in every way game here. I hadn't experienced the invisible gravity suit bug before I got V1.1 but other than that, I have had ZERO issues with this masterpiece.

I played Metroid 2 when I was 13 or so when it came out on the original game boy and I've loved and played all the metroids not on handheld systems up until Metroid Prime 2. You did a VERY impressive job capturing the look, feel and sound of this world, right down to the great music interpretations of old classics.

Thank you for your time invested in this.

I can understand why Nintendo did this but I'm rather disappointed. After all there doesn't seem to be any similar action taken to the Mother 3 translation or Mother 4 project (Although to be fair those are different situations) At the very least I'm glad I was able to download the game before it was taken down. From what I've played of it it seems like a great game and it's a shame that people won't be able to experience it. I really wish there was some way for this game to continue to live on without Nintendo having to worry about defending their IP.

Playing "AM2R" reminded me of why I've enjoy the Metroid series so much, ever since I first experienced "Super Metroid" in 1994. It's a shame that Nintendo would not recognize the passion of the development team and that of the entire fan base by supporting this effort, but hopefully their tactics in these matters will change someday.

The selfish part of me wishes there could have been ONE MORE update to the game, but I also understand the desire to remove oneself from any legal crosshairs and simply move on to other life matters.

To the whole team involved, thank you for your efforts in bringing this project to life. Your passion and unwavering dedication are exemplary, and I wish you all the best of luck in your future projects.

Sincerely,

Another Metroid Fan

Playing this game felt like I was playing an authentic GBA game like fusion. The controls are perfect, the difficulty is satisfying, the ambiance is amazing. I LOVE pixelart, and this is a perfect example of it. The environement, the enemies, the soundtrack. The A in AM2R should stand for Amazing.

Tenouttaten!

As much as I love Nintendo and sometimes defend their decisions more than I should, at this point I've had enough. They are hurting themselves more than anything by prohibiting fans to do any games, videos, even let's plays, which is where a lot of people discover games. I heard they are not doing any Metroid games because it is not the type of games the eastern prefers.

Metroid is my favourite Nintendo franchise, And they are doing nothing for it's 30th aniversary except a multiplayer spinoff.

Your game is amazing.

Take it as a compliment: Your game is so good, they see it as competition!

What this case shows is that it's better to release such games as open source.
Think of the situation, when you released the source code and assets on github simultaneously with your normal 1.0 release.
Dozens of forks would exist and the game would evolve and have further development.

Thank you for your work, I enjoyed the game very much!

Thank you, Doc, and all those who helped along the way. AM2R is fantastic. Absolutely wonderful. You successfully made a Metroid game the caliber of Super or Prime. This has impressions world wide. I only learned of it days ago and all things aside, this is a fucking good game! Made me feel things that only other masterpieces have. I own all the cartridge Metroids released here. The attention to detail without monetary oversight setting limits in AM2R and putting the bar as high as the best is a virtue that shows as a labour of love to be loved. Much as I'd believe the team was exploring the capabilities of the snes, enhancing the series, you've pushed limits here and re imagined this into something that also took it to the next level for me. This ranks very highly in my game playing experience and appeals directly to me in all aspects. I would pay for this but it's been 12 years since being marketed to like this as an older gamer. If only a 30th anniversary Metroid collection could be made available with some top tier included and endorsed fan art if you know what I mean, to mark the occasion, I'd be willing to spend some money to celebrate that. I really can't imagine Metroid 2 any better and gotta say kudos to all your self improvement in learning all the skills you and your team have over the years and demonstrated. The result in sharing has been so satisfying and fun.
Unknown said…
I'm sorry to hear you received a DMCA notice. But I want to say that AM2R is a fantastic game and I'm sure it will age well. I haven't enjoyed a 2D Metroid game since Zero Mission, so I'm more than happy to have experienced your remake. It's so nicely polished that I just cannot find any problems with it. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you got Nintendo to finally realize that this is the kind of Metroid game the fans want.

In 2008, a ten year old boy found a website saying that some guy was recreating Metroid II from the ground up. This filled his heart with joy because he wanted to play a good-looking version of Metroid II since the original was so hard to see and understand. He followed the blog religiously for years to come. He logged back onto the AM2R blog to check on the release after having not checked for about 2 weeks. His dreams were shattered.

I've been following this for eight years, waiting for the day it might be released. I guess I'll never see the finished product.
Thank you for the years of hope and excitement, for each smile I had when I opened up the website to see a new update or demo released. Thank you.

You know, part of me just wants to let this go and accept the circumstances. Part of me wants to say "well, Nintendo has every right to defend their IPs" and leave it at that.

But you know what? Fuck that.

Fuck you, Nintendo.

Fuck you for your terrible treatment of your fans, on which you've been called out for many times by your peers.

Fuck your region locking and your copyright strikes against YouTubers and fan game makers who have been giving you FREE promotion for years.

Fuck your executives with their idiotic business decisions and acting like they're king of the heap when the company has been on the bottom for years.

Fuck your overpaid, overrated and over-revered dinosaur designers who should have been replaced decades ago.

Fuck your endless soulless platformers, your 'freemium' BS and your overuse of the Pokemon franchise to the point where any day now I can expect designs based on toasters and toenail clippings.

Fuck your gimmicky, underpowered consoles that have made the company a laughingstock.

Fuck your inexplicable insistence on ruining franchises that needed no change and leaving franchises that desperately need innovation in a state of stale repetitiveness.

Fuck your alienation of third parties, which has led to your competitors making millions.

Fuck Sakurai and his bias towards his favorite franchises and putting garbage no one asked for in his Smash games and his hissy fits when fans don't like it.

And DOUBLE fuck your disgusting treatment of Gunpei Yokoi, a man who made the company what it was. He was smart enough to see that the Virtual Boy wasn't ready and WARNED you many times that it would be a bad idea to put it on the market. Yet you went ahead with it anyway and BLAMED HIM when it was a failure, even going as far as humiliating him in front of investors. Absolutely disgusting.

And fuck your self-righteous fan-drones who blindly defend you and criticize those who actually have the audacity to have high standards.

...but besides that, everything was great.

Any way, why not do a Kickstarter to buy the rights and make this thing official in the 3DS and/or Wii U? If that fail, You still got the experience for something cool, I mean, you perfected an already cool game! why not start your own? Congratulations man! Doc, you've done incredible work. But making a full-scale remake of Metroid II was a risk, and it's a risk you took. You were still able to deliver an incredible experience, but releasing "Metroid II but better" while Nintendo is still making money off the game via Virtual Console couldn't have been worse timing. Perhaps if the game came out sooner this would have been different, but I wouldn't want to final product any other way.

You could at least still make changes to the game with the patcher programs out there. I'm talking IPS stuff, which lots of rom hackers use to distribute their work. I realize that you may actually be done with the project now, though, and therefore there's really nothing left in terms of changes to distribute. I understand - Nintendo's sour reaction to a phenomenal fan project has lost them a lot of fans. I don't really stand by them as a company now.
Unknown said…
I have learned of its existence from Kotaku if I'm not mistaken and hurried to see if I could get it.

I was lucky to get my hands on the v1.0 of the game and am glad I did : you did an excellent job, one that is beyond fanwork. It has the polish of a full and official Metroid game, everything from gameplay, ambience, music and style. It handles like a Metroid game, feels like a Metroid game from beginning to end and deserves to be a full-fledged release.

I'd say : talk with Nintendo of America, go to them and present your work to them. Show them what you've created and yes, since its development has stopped, make them understand THIS is a Metroid game that deserve recognition. If anything, make them accept this work of art much like a fan had his own fangame made of "Megaman Vs Street Fighter" with Capcom.

If your game released on the WiiU or the 3DS, Nintendo Shop, I would buy it, no hesitation. Even though I have already played it through once and doing so again now, I would buy it all over again and play it once more.

Nintendo might have given you a C&D but this game deserves to represent what Nintendo once brought to its fan : fun, creative games of high quality... and not horrible knockoffs that are barely playable or have no soul. If they're willing to have 3rd party developpers create upon their licences, BE that guy because you actually get how a Nintendo game should be done.

I tell you; reply to their email and arrange to meet them and show them what you made. You deserve Nintendo's Seal of Quality for making a quality Nintendo product.
Unknown said…
Yeah, Nintendo doesn't seem to want to look at quality fangames like this (at least, now that Satoru Iwata is gone), but will happily give their Seal of Quality to the utter CRAP made by RCMADIAX!

Wow!!! I only found out about AM2R after it's official release -- it spread like wildfire all over social media. I was a huge fan of Super Metroid, Fusion, Zero Mission... but I have to say, AM2R was beyond godlike!! You did an amazing job on this one. This actually felt like it was released by Nintendo, it was that amazing. It's ashame Nintendo never thought of this, but I second some other suggestions that have been made, you should see if Nintendo may be interested in hosting this or making it available, maybe even on 3ds.

The original Metroid 2 was one of the first games I ever played, beat, and loved. Let me please say that you have created something beautiful here! This is a truly amazing feat of creation, and I feel grateful to have had the chance to play it. My friend, you have honored us all :)

This sucks.

For years this game was available as a Demo. This Demo was also well known, also it had some videos on youtube were Nintendo does takes a lot against videos about their games.
Nintendo did nothing against AM2R.

Now this game is finished and they heard from it the first time? What.The.Hell? Did they sleep the last couple of years?

They had the chance to stop this project many years ago, they did nothing.
I do not understand this.
Now you were able to finish this game and they say "Hahahaha, you idiot metroid fan. All your work was in vain for all these years."

Fortunately, because of the rules of the internet, it was not totally in vain, you were able to release it, so this game will be ever downloadable. Thankfully.

A game from a fan for fans of the franchise, without any commercial intention and they take it down. Trademark issues sucks sometimes, because they show us all, that fans are not allowed, but only customers :(.

So i have to say, thank you for all your effort.

I STRONGLY recommend you make your work an original IP as that way it's less likely to be sued. If you wanted to do a kickstarter I'd sure as hell back it.

Also, a massive thank you for such an AMAZING contribution to the metroid fan base. How ironic, fans have produced more in the last 5 years than Nintendo themselves...
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with this project, and this post may in fact be the first I've seen of it. But I can say this:
I am surprised at how badly you've been treated here, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors, whether or not they involve this game, and I consider myself quite lucky to have discovered a large metroidvania that's actually complete. I look forward to playing it, an I intend to follow your works in future, if possible.

to the creators and those who gave us this fantastic indie Metroid...THANK YOU. thank you so much for all your hard work, all the countless hours you put in, and most of all for making me feel like i was a kid again plastered to the TV playing Super Metroid back in '94. you guys slayed this project, it may not be perfect with its bugs here and there, but ill take it. its far superior than what Nintendo has been feeding us for the past several years with Other M and this lousy new federation game.

i know you said not to hate nintendo, but i cant help but feel disdain for them regardless. they had so much time to stop you guys from completing this project before you put in all those hours. to me, that was just rude and cold hearted. i understand they must protect their property, but they couldve done so with much more tact and respect to all of you who worked on this. to shut it down during metroid's 30th anniversary was also another display of cold hearted behavior on their part and thus alot of their fanbase who support Metroid as well as your project were alienated in the process. still, i hope the happiness you all have brought to myself and to the other players of this wonder project will have given you some sense of accomplishment. good luck in your future endeavors!

Hey, just saw the news and I want to offer my sympathies. I played your game start to end and I have to say it was a masterpiece. I'm not kidding when I say that your labour of love is one of the best games I've played in years and that no matter what Nintendo did, all of your years of work wasn't for naught.

Thank you once again for helping put a big old smile on my face.

I've recently wanted to make a metroid style game but I have little to no experience doing game design and it's waaay to much of a time consuming thing for me. Seeing things get take down notices is always disappointing and I can't think of how frustrating essentially loosing all that work is.
BUT
Take what you've learnt from this and try create your own metroidvania esque game. You obviously have the skills to pull it together and you never know it could become really well received.

Plus with the audience you've most likely gathered with this you'd have some people who would be interested in that.

As someone who played the original Metroid 2 until I was able to beat it in under 2 hours, I must say that AM2R was a joy and a priveledge to play. Nothing was more thrilling than following familiar paths and then finding myself encountering something new. The changes to the metroid fights alone were amazing, but the inclusion of non-metroid bosses blew me away.

Truly a sad day that this has happened to such an amazing fan tribute, though I hope this does not ruin your motivation.

Doc, the new Humble Bundle that just went up is all about GameMaker Studio Pro. You can get a legit license for the full version, including the IOS and Android module for only $15! I know you'd be interested in that because if I recall you don't actually have the IOS or Android modules for your license.

To anyone reading this please pass this message on to Doc. Thank you.

Tis a shame, Doc. I really love this remake, even though I never finished the original. Don't worry though, as I'm sure you know, Nintendo can't remove this game from everything considering its now floating around on the internet. forever. Which is befitting of such a lovely passionate remake that Nintendo should have just ignored but choose not to because they're still a disgusting corporation. I say that with a heavy heart, and I know that not all of Nintendo is disgusting, just one of the most important parts of it is, and that would be marketers and sales reps. They don't have to take down the fan game as people who weren't planning on buying federation force may not buy it out of spite. I don't believe they think of all of the consequences of their deeds.

I also believe they have some of the stupidest out of touch executives in existence, just like most other game companies. Why not just buy the games assets and compensate Doc and his team and make a fortune off of only a small amount of cash given to the original REcreators?

Thank you for making this game. It's incredibly well done. My nephew saw me playing this and he now has Super Metroid on his 3ds. It's safe to say that because of this game, a new generation of gamers will have a better chance to enjoy Metroid like we do.

The younger gamers don't generally play old and stale games. Which is what Metroid had become prior to you breathing the life back into it. Something Nintendo hasn't bothered doing, or doesn't know how to do it.

Thank you Doc for everything. The years you spent building AM2R were not in vain. You've given the Metroid fans of the world a great gift and the internet will make sure your project lives on for years to come. I just hope Nintendo learns something from all of this. Highly unlikely but one can still hope right?

DrM64, your pretty inspirational. You were so positive after Nintendo sent the DMCA notice and pretty much showed that you can really do whatever you set your mind to. I mean, heck, you made a game probably worth $40. I could see myself going and buying it at the store it is so good. If I were Nintendo, I'd buy the game frome you and sell it that way everyone could be happy. Thanks for such an amazing game.

Good old Nintendo. Won't do anything good with half of their own IPs, stops anyone else from doing anything with them either. I LOVE Metroid. Even the original Metroid 2. It was one of the very first few games I got on my 3DS when I found the E-Shop. To see news that AM2R was finally released was an amazing thing. Instead, it gets shut down, because screw you for giving Metroid fans what they want, instead of shovelware and nothing for years.

It needs to be said, though. THANK YOU. Thank you for putting so much love into this game. Thank you for giving us something to cherish. And thank you for reminding us that someone out there still loves Samus as much as we do.
satvara said…
For me to merely say that AM2R is my "game of the year" couldn't possibly give it the distinction it deserves. What you and your team have done is exceptional and will be remembered by Metroid fans forever.

I'm sorry it had to end this way. No good deed goes unpunished, as they say.

Thank you so much.

Keep updating it and try to dialogue with nintendo.

Yeah!! the game is structurally complete but it lack a little bit of things.

Shitheads are jealous that you've done better things with their IP than they've done in almost a decade. Hell, when they put Metroid II on the 3DS they didn't even bother giving it the Super Game Boy colors that make it visually serviceable. It's a shame you didn't get to your other updates, though at least you got a complete game out. In fact, a buddy and I are planning to rerun Prime, and we're going to lead into it with a run of AM2R.

I am curious as to what all you had planned to add to it. I know you had "features" in mind, but I'm wondering if you were going to add to the gameplay, or just tighten mechanics and menu functions, or what?
AH said…
I've noticed these things mentioned a couple of times. Metroid's copyright is owned by Nintendo. The DMCA was due to a copyright violation, NOT trademark. Nintendo won't lose the rights to Metroid if they allowed this game to continue to exist as it's copyright, not trademark.
They also have the legal right to do it as this game does NOT fall under fair use. Fair use isn't based on whether you make money or not, it's based on context. A full game doesn't fall under fair use.
Also to those saying he should just ignore Nintendo. That's easy for you to say when you don't have an email from a huge giant company who could sue you to oblivion.
At the end of the day, it would have been nice for them to be a bit more lenient. This did take close to a decade to make and clearly shows the want and need for more 2d Metroid.
The only thing I hope comes out of this is that Nintendo sees the popularity of a 2d sidescroller Metroid and decides to make something themselves. Though I doubt they will. Nintendo is a monolith that is slow to change. Unfortunately.
Unknown said…
Actually, the game DOES fall under fair use.
Anonymous said…
If there'll be no more AM2R updates, why is this blog still active?
AH said…
Kevin Lee. How does it fall under fair use? Since when is making a full game with IP you don't own classed as fair use?
Marandahir said…
Thank you for all your work with the community all these years.

Everyone should go and support official Metroid games like Metroid II on 3DS. The only way we'll get high quality Metroid titles in a legal fashion is if Nintendo sees the franchise as profitable.

NFITC1 said…
This is not even slightly surprising. Nintendo has had a long history of this behavior. It's disappointing the fanbase to do this, but I understand their desire to protect their copyrights. If this makes me want to play it INSTEAD of paying for a virtual copy which...that's right! It DOESN'T EXIST!

No one said that Metroid II was bad. It wasn't. It was a great GB game that I spent many hours on. But if my cart gets damaged (it's in my attic so it's possible) then I'll never get to play it again and there's no way to get another one.

We should be grateful that this project saw even partial completion. Usually these get taken down before they get released in any form.
Unknown said…
I only discovered the project a few days after its release and was completely blown away by the quality. I seriously don't know how to express how amazing it is.
On the bright side...the game played perfect from begging to end so there should be no need to update it. And as we all know, once on the internet its in there forever and there is no taking it out. So your work will be there and be recognized as one of the best things on the Metroid series ever made forever :). Congratulations on the work a big thank you for the great game!

I am truly sorry Nintendo has taken this action. The work you have put into this shows in spades. This is the game Nintendo should have been working on, not Federation Force. I was wondering, does this mean the Soundtrack release is now out of the question? That was the other release I was REALLY looking forward to as the music and arrangements you have created for this game is absolutely some of the best the Metroid series has to offer!

See you in your next Mission, Doctor 64!

Honestly you've succeeded where Nintendo came up short. There are several opportunities here. One is contacting Nintendo's marketing department and having them launch it on their platform and keep you as the developer. You could also find yourself with a job working for Nintendo, if you approach it correctly. I think Nintendo is missing out so I think you need to do some bargaining. Consider AM2R as your resume and apply for a job with them. There's a lot of potential here.

Just another comment with glowing praise. I've been following this project for around 5-6 years now, AM2R is every bit as good as the best moments of the Metroid series and you truly kept the essence of the original intact while making additions that only served to improve the experience.

I think I speak for everyone when I say, good luck on your future endeavors, and we're all very interested in seeing where your career takes you and the projects you come out with from here on.

I'd also like to say that, a long time ago, when I first heard of this project, I was still a teenager. Seeing your work made me interested in possibly developing my own game. Over the years mental illness and other personal issues got in the way, but seeing the game finally get a release, and playing it (my god, PLAYING IT. What a joy.) has really inspired me to get back into it. So thank you.

I know you said we shouldn't hate on Nintendo because Metroid is their IP. While I fully agree with that statement, I do not agree the way the company has decided to give the cold shoulder to this series. People have been asking about 2d metroids and prime series and what do we get? The attrocious Metroid Other M. Now metroid celebrates its 30th anniversary and what does Nintendo do about it? Nothing, they give us "Metroid prime: Federation force" which sucks.

Then they silently put the Metroid franchise as a whole under the rug and worse than that, they tracked down your incredible amazing remake of Metroid 2 and instead of promoting it or giving you a job or something, they decided to shut it down. I really hate how Nintendo treats its fanbase like we don't have any voice at all. That's why Nintendo has lost the gaming race since a couple of years. I truly respect people like you and the guys that helped you, people that gave their absolute best to bring us this quality packed game.

I wish you the best in your future endeavors DOC, and fuck Nintendo.

I can't believe this...i just found out about this when watching the game theory video channel, i couldn't believe what i was hearing.
So i came here and saw this...Metroid2 was a huge part of my childhood. Many years later when trying to get back into nostalgia, i found out about this and was overly joyed to see this being done, and in such a good way as well.

I am just glad i was able to play this once before it got taken down.

You said in your previous post that you a hired programmer, BUT if you still want to feel a bit of freedom game making, why not make your own game? It could be a spiritual successor to classic Metroid games, just invent a slightly new concept with new characters and Bam. You already have a fanbase, so people will enjoy it.
Unknown said…
I agree with the people who have said to alter the game a bit. Change Samus' sprite to something else, like that of a chozo. Make a few revisions here and there, change the title, something the effect of Chuzo's quest (I misspelled Chozo on purpose.) The rest of your game is so pretty it is already altered from the original. Use your creativity and boom; truly your own game and with a huge fanbase following. Grow your business. Your call, but I think you can legally save this. Change it enough and you have something way better than Axium Verge; maybe Nintendo will then even recognize it...

Well its a Damm shame that Nintendo(Nin-10-DOH!)came in like a bully and play the copyright card to shut you down DoctorM64. But the on bright side they waited or stayed ignorant about your project all these years that allowed you work on it to the point where you could at least put out a complete version of the game for a short period time. I have played your incomplete demos and I was blown away by what was accomplished thus far in those demos. I enjoyed everything that you have put in from the new and your remastered music from previous Metroid titles, to the updated look and updated game play mechanics, to the unique new areas and unique new enemies. I wanted to thank you DoctorM64, and all those that joined you, for all of your time and effort in producing this game into fully working version. If I find a finished copy of this game, I will gladly acquire the copy and play it.

To Nintendo, Shame on you! Why shut these people down? The last remake you did was back in 2004 (12 years ago since I'm writing this post) with zero mission. I'm sure that all who read this will agree that that was your best Metroid title to that date, and that a remake of GB's Metroid 2 should've been in the works by you, Nintendo, shortly there after, and I'm sure that the demand for that was there by people who played zero mission. I know I wanted it. But you chose not to go ahead with that project, let it fall to the wayside and allowed it to fade away over the years. In my books you abandoned this particular project and should have no right to claim copyright infringement. However if you did complete a remake of Metroid 2 and for whatever reason chose not to release it; why not work out a compromise with DoctorM64 and people. Buy the source code from DoctorM64 or allowed him a licencing for his AM2r and make it available for purchase over the internet and/or exclusively over your consoles' "eShop". I would very much Hate to see this project also fade away over time.

GAVITRAX MZ said…
For you people that are saying "Fuck Nintendo" and "lets petition this", you aren't really helping the cause. Nintendo doesn't care what a dumb petition on the internet says, and Nintendo is just protecting it's IP. Why did they do this? Basically it's because AM2R might deter some purchases of the classic 2d Metroid games on the Eshop. However, I would say this is kind of a bad move. Sure, AM2R might steal some purchases, but you'd think that it would also influence a lot of people to buy and play through the older games again for nostalgia's sake. Not only that, but they made a lot of people angry, close to a couple thousand (I'm assuming the number). I doubt that these people are going to want to go buy anything from Nintendo for awhile. In conclusion, this was a poor decision by Nintendo, but they didn't do it out of spite or jealousy. It's not personal, it's just business.

Phew. I haven't even talked directly about the finished game yet. I'm still playing through it (Life is pretty busy right now), but I'll create a post with my full analysis of the game on the forum and put a link in this comment thread.

Just beat the game 100%, and guys, this game was INCREDIBLE. Honestly, it's one of the best Metroid games I've played and I think it's a shame Nintendo didn't just offer to buy it from you and license it and sell it in the eShop. 10/10, fun design, challenging but not to the point of frustration, and the changes made were definitely in the spirit of innovation for the franchise. Wish I could see more of your work in the future, and if you ever decide to do a Kickstarter for an original production, consider me your first investor. Thanks a bunch for a fun game for a desperately neglected fanbase!

Hey Doc, can you make a full single out of the Unpowered and Powered Distribution Center? Rename it and experiment with making a longer and legendary song out of it, I got this area's song stuck in my head and it isn't annoying as lyrical music to me anyways.
Anonymous said…
That really sucks. I know there's the whole "Just make it not Metroid" solution, but the problem is, this is a remake of Metroid 2! A game that pretty much was screaming for a remake, a game that didn't age as gracefully as Super Metroid. And we all know that Nintendo has no intention of making a remake or any other Metroid game ever, all they want to do now is make New Super Mario Bros. over and over again, and consider "Having it on VC is enough". While there is a stigma about remakes, there are just some games that need them, mostly because they haven't aged quite as well. Super Mario Sunshine could use quite the remake (It still looks good and aged alright, but I'd love a remake with more content), but I doubt Nintendo will get to it... either that or they'll just make it HD and that's about it.

Metroid has pretty much met the same fate as Banjo Kazooie now, Federation Force (A spin off game no one wanted and was originally something else without Metroid. Even if it is okay, no one likes it because everyone waited half a decade for an actual game, and instead get a spinoff that's a slap in the face) didn't do well (What a surprise...), so that means there's not any financial gain to get from making another Metroid game.

Really sucks, Nintendo could be doing what SEGA is doing, and try working with those who make fangames, but no, Nintendo just wants to rot. Funny how just 10 years ago it was practically the opposite, SEGA was on the verge of rotting due to bad PR and Nintendo was seen as still golden, and now SEGA has pretty good PR, and now Nintendo has horrible PR.

I feel like boycotting, but there's really not much I can do, I'll probably end up buying some Nintendo product, not like it will help as a whole bunch of people buy that. All I can think is that we flood Nintendo's PR department with complaints about their actions and demand change... or we don't buy NX

I know you said to not hate on Nintendo, but this was the last straw for me. I have now placed Nintendo on my permanent boycott list (Apple is the other company on that list). I'm selling my 3DS and Wii U. I'm keeping my older stuff like Gamecube and Gameboy Advance. Not buying the NX, and I'll never see Breath of the Wild either.

PLEASE LET THIS REACH THE EYES OF THE DEVELOPER!!

It is not over yet!
You need only to create a metroidvania game with the same consept, but different characters.

Please dont let your effort go to waste. This path will lead you to glory one day. Make sure to make your fans know what happened in the most legal way possible. This is your story

What a fine title. Nintendo should look at your game and take notes, because they clearly don't know what to do with Metroid at this point. You've made a fantastic game and I'm glad I got to be a part of it.

If you made a game with your own IP you can bet I'd follow it and eventually buy it, because you're an amazing dev and this is so shitty.

I'm really sorry for what's happened. After 10 years, this is the worst way it could go out, but rest assured you've got dedicated fans that will play this for years to come and will support you fully in future projects.

Yes, it is still illegal to distribute a game using characters, assets, and concepts that are copyrighted by a different company. Even if you're not making money off of it, it can still effect Nintendo's income to a certain degree.

Don't get mad at Doc for not releasing the terms of his cease and desist letter. For all we know, it tells him not to post anything on the blog beyond telling his followers that game development has ceased. Not only that, but it may be in the terms of the cease and desist letter that he doesn't release any of the letter or information described by the letter.

Nintendo, if you read this, HIRE THESE PEOPLE!!! like seriously this is prob the 2nd metroid game ive loved to death (other 1 is Prime 1. I even 100%ed prime 1 for the 30th year.) you probably won't but still these guys can help you make possibly the next great metroid game. Other M, Federation Force, those are examples of failed games that shouldve been scrapped and redone (heck even Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon was going to be a metroid game at one point amd i might've bought it if it was still a metroid game!) but still hire these guys and also, don't screw up the NX kinda like you did with the U.

Thank you very much for your work. You'r a very talented and I admire you for make the 30th aniversary of Metroid special for all of us. Thank you!

i just have a question is it illegal to play the game. like if i found another download link and i download it is it illegal to download and pla after they shut it down
Unknown said…
first off i have to say thank you Doc. thank you for all the years of hard work and dedication towards this project. for many of us who have been waiting since after zero mission for a metroid 2 remake to be made, you have made our dreams come true.

now i know this sounds really bad but... have you considered making your own game? think about it, metroidvania is a genre not a specific game that has a licence to protect it. you could easily make a metroidvania with a sci-fi horror theme just like metroid fusion or something. add beams and weapons that were never in a metroid game before. you could totally run with it, start a kickstarter and i bet everyone of your fans would back you! just my advice, i'd hate to see such great talent go to waste.

I just finished the game now, and I had to come here and sincerely say to you, Doc and everyone else involved: THANK YOU!

What a amazing game, easily the best game in the year, 3rd best 2D Metroid game ever, only because Super Metroid is incomparable, and Zero Mission wins because it's structure is like a regular Metroid game, instead of the most linear that is Metroid II. So I'd say AM2R is tied with Fusion.

Anyway, big thanks again for making possible to celebrate the 30 years of this awesome franchise!
While it is sad that development for this project has ended, I think some folks are misguided. If I had to take a guess, DoctorM64 knew that this project would one day face this kind of attention. How could he not? Developing a title using an intellectual property you do not own can really only go two ways: the IP's owner not caring, or the IP's owner stepping in to protect their copyrights. Nintendo has every right to do this and, in this case, did so without overreacting with legal action. They requested it be stopped and the developer agreed. If protecting your IP is tantamount to 'greed', then you either don't understand that word, or are simply misguided. Whether or not that company is doing anything with that IP is inconsequential.

That being said, this is a project that I have followed off and on for years. It was great to finally see it reach some sort of conclusion and that it will still float around out there in the great expanse of the Internet. Instead of casting ill will towards Nintendo, turn it around, and positively open dialogue towards them. Whether you think you are being heard as fans, you should still speak up, and let them know what you want to see. Don't spout the normal Internet hate and slander towards them. Approach it with respect, but with firm resolve of what you want to see get made. Nobody wants to listen to whiners; they want constructive feedback. And maybe support some of the stuff Nintendo does? I've seen too many fandoms backhandedly support the companies they say they love, but continually slap in the face. Just walk away from them if you feel like they've abandoned you and let it go. Otherwise, why not take that feeling, and try redirecting it in a more positive fashion? It couldn't hurt.

I agree with the comment about asking Nintendo to make the game and make it official. I mean the only bug I found was a missile not shown on map, and even so I found it. Nintendo should give you a JOB, And take this game and make it a eShop game for their current consoles. I'd buy it!

MFG. Ein Fan.

I am very sad to hear this decision. It is a real shame the corporate world cannot let passionate and creative people support the company's works for free. I have mad respect for you and everyone else that assisted with the project. The is a project of love and dedication that is as good, if not better, then some of the orginal related works. You sir have left a legacy that will be sustain by others across the Internet for years to come.

Nintendo will never get another penny out of my wallet EVER again if they dont reverse this, publish AM2R and try to hire the Doc. I spit on Nintendo. I SPIT ON NOA. SPIT.

You're a coward for letting Nintendo bully you into taking down your 8+ years of hard work. Don't you realize all they're doing is using scare tactics from one of there layer cronies from NOA? They won't take this to court. They're scaring you into doing what they want you to do and you just going to let them win with ass up. What are they going to sue you on? Distributing a NON-PROFIT fan game with no threat to them. Stop letting these big lousy co's bully you when you've done nothing worng. FIGHT BACK and say no.

The game now belongs to the fans, and that's what counts. Truly a work of art. I'll never get used to the idea of my favorite Metroid game being one that isn't developed/published by Nintendo. But it is what it is, and it is goddamn beautiful.

I know this game took you a long time and a bit of research (extensive gameplay) to make, but I think I speak for everybody here when I say we anticipate your next project(s). Like a Metroid game that isn't Metroid by title, or maybe a different style/genre of game. You have a talent for this stuff, and we would pay money for more of this stuff. Well, at least I and a good portion of us would. Though maybe you don't feel right in asking for money for this but the Joker did say "If you're good at something, never do it for free." Though...AM2R being free was a huge treat to us all, I do kinda feel bad I didn't pay $15 for it on Steam or whatever. Not arguing with it, but I feel like a dirty pirate. I kinda like it...but that's besides the point. You made a great game, mate.

Even if it's not in games, I wish you well with your future endeavors. Whatever they may be.

It took me a long time, but I finally played this... what can I say? It's the best metroid related thing that I have seen in many years. Those losers of nintendo should be hiring you, since they apparently can do something half as good as your project even when they have all the means. I honestly hope that you decide to make a new game, one of your own creation, because you have talent and It would be a shame if this were to be you only project.

My best wishes to you, don't let this desmotivate you, here is a guy from the other side of the world that really enjoyed your work, and I didn't even grew up with metroid! I was a sega guy!

That isn't even close to being accurate. A blqtant misnomer that has somehow perpetuated all over the internet...

Dear Milton - there is a MetroidVania+SCHMUP game called "The Guardian Legend"

I BEG you to play it and re-envision it just like you did with AM2R

PS Broderbund is either defunct or simply won't care - and I'm sure their partner COMPILE.... well has ANYONE heard of them? At all? Exactly.

Please look this game up, redo musical remixes in say 32 bit (or even 16?) that would be faithful......

I figure it's a great project for you...... this game has such a giant fanbase you probably could ask for help if you wanted!

(Please have a native Spanish speaker translate this for him - Thank you!)

Nintendo being Nintendo.

Colour me unimpressed.

Awesome work to the creator of the game. Miles better than the shit Nintendo makes nowadays. Don't be sad, you did a fantastic game, and we, Metroid fans, thank you from the deep of our hearts.

I think we should boycott Nintendo products and any other mean to get our fan games Back!
Anonymous said…
Very sad to hear this. Nintendo does not respect their fans, so I don't see why should we respect them. Anyone looking to do remakes or ROM hacks with any Nintendo content should do so completely anonymously, possibly using Tor or Freenet to talk about and release these projects. That way Nintendo couldn't find their real life identities and shut down these games.

So... Nintendo no make good games of Metroid since too many years, (For me, Other M and federation force no are Metroids, M was made for the studio of a hack and slash genre game, change Samus totally, gameplay too, and the suit, ugh... And federation force... Is federation force, can be good game for teamplay, but could not use Metroid name.

The fans made a very good remake for years, no take money, and was a good game, and nintendo close? Just like a shit... Fans take to fans who their want and fixed bux in lower time than an official company. Official company made "Metroid games" and kill the saga, yeah, very good, nintendo, you reach the hate who i have to activison for destroy Destiny.

Sorry for the bad English, im spanish.

nintendo is pulling some serious bs over you

Anyone else feel like this was a real dick move for Nintendo to make? The guy spends literally YEARS producing this thing with no motive other than making sure that one of the finest titles in the franchise gets the remake it deserves, and then Nintendo swoops in and orders him to stop AFTER all that time and labor have been invested. Certainly makes me not want to ever give that company a single penny more for any of their products for the rest of my life.

This is a little sad, the good side is that you were able to finish the game and now we can play it and thank you.
